Cycling

This round tour takes you to the enchanting landscape of the Wümmewiesen and the photogenic artist village of Fischerhude. From Nelson-Mandela-Park you cycle past Hollersee to Bürgerpark. Following the Kuhgraben, you get straight into the countryside: You pass the western Hollerland with its many canals and then drive into the nature reserve on the Wümme.

You then cycle on the best asphalt routes and flat gravel paths through the vastness of the Wümme lowlands and the cultural landscape of the district of Osterholz. After 37 kilometers, the tranquil town of Fischerhude is ideal for a rest with a view of thatched houses. Then it's back to the species-rich Wümmewiesen - you can stop at various lookout points and watch birds. From Borgfeld, the Jan-Reiners-Weg leads you back to Bremen and finally you are back at the starting point.

Anti-Colonial Monument (the Elephant), Nelson Mandela Park

Highlight • Monument

It is impressive how flexibly the people of Bremen deal with their history: first built as a monument to the colonial era, the elephant is now a monument against colonialism.

With a little patience you can watch birds at the Kuhgrabensee. There are also two wooden observation posts. The two cottages are spacious and shaded. Through narrow hatches you can overlook the bird sanctuary unnoticed by the birds.

The New Wümm Bridge crosses the river at this point and connects Bremen with Lower Saxony - the border actually runs right along the middle of the river.

Parzival-Hof Windmill Quelkhorn

Highlight • Monument

Unfortunately, you can't quite get to the mill because it is part of a living and working community for people with and without disabilities. But the mill is well suited as a photo motif.

Fischerhude Artists' Village

Highlight • Settlement

Nestled between the many arms of the Wümme lies the artists' village of Fischerhude. Many trees give the place a special charm and for this reason it is also known as the island forest village. The small village is romantic, rural and quiet and is absolutely worth a visit.

Borgfelder Wümmewiesen Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Borgfelder Wümmewiesen are the largest nature reserve in Bremen and wonderful for cycling. In winter, a flooded meadow landscape develops here. You can find many rare plant species, such as the marsh marigold. Endangered bird species such as the corncrake are also native here.

Trail Reviews

August 4, 2023, Fa WE, Kuhsiel, Fischerhude, Wümmewiesen und zurück

Start and finish.: Landhaus Kuhsiel from here along the dike through Borgfeld, past Falkenberg and Quelkhorn to Fischerhude. After a long break left along the Wümme and through the Wümmewiesen to the starting point. Tip: Wonderful tour, easy to drive, a lot of variety, plenty of nature - again and again -.

Another round of Fischerhude on largely unknown paths. A lot through forest, field and moor, over hill and dale and sand. But doable with a trekking bike. A somewhat difficult stretch of about 300 meters, where it is difficult to push yourself as the path is quite narrow, but at the end there is a nice bench waiting in the evening sun.

The sun is shining, perfect cycling weather. I found a tour on Komoot and followed it along nicely. It was a really nice tour, incredibly varied, with several places to stop for refreshments. It also went through a lot of forest. The trails were all good to very good, though. Even the singletrack through the Rautendorfer Moor was manageable. Happy to follow. Stay cheerful 😃
