Trappist Route Westmalle

Hiking

This is a "tasty" route where you can follow in the footsteps of one of our country's most famous products: Trappist beer.

These beers are still made by monks. Only 13 breweries in the world are allowed to use the Authentic Trappist Product (ATP) label. Five of them are in Belgium and one is the subject of this walk.

Of course, you’ll pass the abbey where the brewing magic happens and you can taste the result while you’re at it. But we also want to invite you to get a little involved in the world of faith that provides the framework for the beer. After all, it was not brewed as an intoxicant, but as food. Today, the main aim is to enjoy and preserve an important tradition. Brewing is a welcome source of income for the region.

Drieboomkensberg Pilgrimage Site

Highlight (Segment) • Religious Site

This place of pilgrimage is dedicated to Our Lady of Fever. The resort is located on the highest peak of a group of inland dunes. In 1746 the 'Convoy Battle' took place in Drieboomkensberg during the 'Succession War'. An English officer was seriously injured and he promised to erect a chapel if he survived the battle alive. His prayers were answered and around 1750 he had a chapel built here. However, this chapel was destroyed in 1800 by a terrible storm. The chapel was never rebuilt. A statue of Mary was hung from one of the three larchs on the hill. This statue can still be found in Drieboomkensberg. In the area you will find the beautiful Kempen forests and the ancient Zandven. The ideal environment to relax,

Saint Paul's Church (Marc Dessauvage)

Highlight • Religious Site

Saint Paul's Church was designed by Marc Dessauvage and was consecrated in 1967. The intention was to hide this church in the woods, as it were. It is a fairly low church building with a flat roof, in the style of post-war modernism. An oblique light wall provides lighting inside and contact with nature outside. The interior, also designed by Dessauvage, is sober and invites you to rest and contemplate. There is also a spacious parking lot where you can leave the car for a walk through the Trappist forests.

Westmalle Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

The Trappist beers produced by Westmalle Abbey are known all over the world. The monks themselves are no longer involved in the brewing process, but have the overall supervision.

Unfortunately, you cannot visit the Westmalle brewery to avoid disturbing the contemplation in the abbey. The Café Trappisten opposite the abbey shows a free video of the brewery, including in English. You must reserve by calling +32(0)3 312 05 02 or by sending an email to info@trappisten.be.

In addition to beer, the monks also make cheese - this tradition has existed since 1870. You can buy the monastery cheese at the gate in three different degrees of maturity.

Shady and quiet walking route, through the wooded area, idyllic paths. The loop is approximately 8 km.

Today we followed the path of the Trappists. They are real artists in brewing beer. Our walk started in Westmalle at the abbey. We walked swiftly side by side. Our woffer was not with us because of the heat. At home on the couch she lay very contented. We crossed the Molenbos but unfortunately saw not a single fox. On some roads we unexpectedly came across a chapel. It was a journey mainly in the green, with these tropical temperatures still very good to do. At the end we sat down on our hole and we enjoyed the Trappists their barley wet.

Parked at the cafe de Trappisten we crossed to walk towards the abbey. We are in the Molenbos. The pieces of forest on our path were beautiful, however a part of the road runs along the street.. can enjoy in all peace and quiet.
