Waypoints

A

Waffle (Formerly Bicicletta)

Highlight • Cafe

This cafe has now changed management and is called Waffle and Coffee. Still has bike racks and outside seating although I did not see the bike locks last time I was there. Staff still great and the food is even better. Bacon and egg sandwich is very good. Coffee, Tea and cakes and of course waffles. Good clean toilets so well worth visiting as a rest stop.

9.87 km

Uphill Road to Chrishall

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Long and steady uphill or flowing downhill, depending on your direction of travel. Lovely views on both sides in either direction!

Tip by

2

32.9 km

Cambridge

Highlight • Other

General city highlight - not very helpful in a place like Cambridge. Better look at the individual ones for your tour planning.

Tip by

3

34.2 km

Espresso Library, Cambridge

Highlight • Other

Great coffee and food in the heart of Cambridge. Well used by the local cycling community and a must visit if you're riding into town.

4

39.6 km

DNA Pathway (Addenbrooke’s to Great Shelford)

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

Connection between Biomedical Campus and Shelford with an unfolded gene on the path. Though the paint declines (nice analogly for DNA reading faults) still impressive if you think about the amount of information stored in this relatively small gene alone.

Tip by

51.2 km

Audley End House and Park

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

Follow the River Cam through the Audley End estate, finishing with stunning views of the house itself. In summer you can walk around the beautiful grounds too.

What is the best time of year to cycle the Saffron Walden to Cambridge loop?

The route is enjoyable for much of the year. Spring and summer offer pleasant weather for cycling through picturesque countryside and charming villages. Autumn provides beautiful scenery with changing leaves. Be mindful of the unpaved sections in wet conditions during winter, which might require a more adventurous rider or a gravel bike.

Are there any specific challenges or considerations for cycling this route in winter?

A gravel bike might be a better choice for these segments during colder, wetter months. Always ensure your bike is well-maintained and consider appropriate clothing for colder weather.

What are the main points of interest and cafe stops along the Saffron Walden to Cambridge cycling route?

Key highlights include the cycling-themed Waffle (Formerly Bicicletta) cafe in Saffron Walden, and the Espresso Library, Cambridge, another popular cycling cafe. You'll also pass by the historic Audley End House and Park and parts of the DNA Pathway (Addenbrooke’s to Great Shelford). The route also features an Uphill Road to Chrishall offering scenic views.

Is the Saffron Walden to Cambridge loop dog-friendly?

This is a cycling route primarily on roads and dedicated cycle paths. While dogs are generally allowed in public spaces, it's not specifically designed as a dog-walking trail. If you plan to bring a dog, ensure it is safely secured in a bike trailer or basket, and always keep it on a leash when off the bike, especially in populated areas or near livestock.

What should I bring for a touring bicycle ride on this loop?

For this moderate touring bicycle route, it's advisable to bring a well-maintained bike, a helmet, water, snacks, and a repair kit. Given the cycle-friendly nature of Cambridge, lights and reflective clothing are recommended, especially if cycling near dusk or at night. A good quality bike lock is also essential due to concerns about bike theft in urban areas.

Is this cycling route suitable for beginners or families?

Classified as 'moderate,' this route requires a good level of fitness. While generally suitable for all skill levels, the presence of some unpaved sections might be challenging for absolute beginners or very young children, especially in wet conditions. Families with older, experienced cyclists might find it enjoyable, but consider the distance (approximately 61.3 km) and duration (around 3 hours 38 minutes).
