Hiking

An easy circular hike with historical and botanical highlights
This circular hike leads from the TorfHaus National Park Visitor Center around the Great Torfhaus Moor, one of the large raised bogs in the Harz National Park, on easy paths with minimal incline. A small part of the moor can be crossed on a boardwalk. In addition to a clear view of the wide, treeless high moor area and a magnificent view of the Brocken, there are also real carnivorous plants and other rare moor inhabitants to discover.
The Moorsteg is closed in winter.
It continues along the "Upper Harz Water Management System", part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and along the historic Kaiserweg - an early trading route between Nordhausen and Bad Harzburg - through nature changing to wilderness. The WaldWandelweg along the way offers interesting information.

Abbegraben

Highlight • River

The Abbegraben is a moat created in 1827 southeast of Torfhaus. It was used to supply the mines of the Burgstätter Zug around Clausthal with drive water for the water wheels there. The ditch taps the water of the Abbe, which rises in the water-rich Brockenfeld - a swampy area southwest of the Brocken. The total length of the Abbegraben is 1,540 meters.

The WaldWandelWeg shows over a distance of approx. 200 meters what the forest of the future could look like here. Numerous information boards provide information about the bark beetle as a natural inhabitant of the spruce mountain forest and its role in forest development.

July 17, 2021,Harz 10 - Kurztripausklang am Torfhausmoor
Before the return trip, soak up some forest air, sun and mountain feeling: Was very good between the peat house and moor. :)

Yesterday I finally went back to the Harz Mountains. After arriving, I wanted to stretch my legs a bit and spontaneously decided to drive to Torfhaus and visit the Große Torfhausmoor.
The starting point was the visitor parking lot at the Harzturm (fee applies). From there, I first walked along the Goetheweg – the well-known hiking trail towards the Brocken. …

Where the young spruces stand
Nuki wants to go today.
Where the beautiful raised moor stands
and the shallow Abbe lives
a gentle wind accompanies us
when we are outside again
The mistress is doing well there too
What more could you want, it gives you courage
I can be so poetic when I try, I could also be called …

Hike #1 today...
From the large parking lot at the National Park House we went to the Great Torfhausmoor. We completed the loop counter-clockwise and so we started along the Abbegraben on the Goetheweg, followed the wooden plank path into the moor, found peat moss, cotton grass and sundew and passed the WaldWandelWeg on the way back. It is well …

Carrying tour // doable with a stroller

We were there during the week when hardly anyone was around. It wouldn't have been a problem with a stroller on the narrow wooden paths, but it's probably different on the weekend when there's more hustle and bustle.

Today would actually be a day of rest. But a look at the weather app told us: "Go to the sun🌞." In Torfhaus we took a walk around the Torfhausmoor. We walked over planked footbridges past heather and dead and newly growing trees🌳.

Very nice hike, even in bad weather!

Since my son liked the wooden plank paths so much, we went on the Torfhausmoor circuit today. The weather was finally kind to us and we had pleasant weather, apart from a few brief drops of rain. The view stretched all the way to the Brocken summit. There are always beautiful things to discover along the way, which are particularly …
