Hiking

The Gaistal Alpine Pasture Paradise lives up to its name: meadows, forests, and the Wetterstein Mountains merge here to form an impressive backdrop, while lively streams and regional culinary delights make your hiking experience perfect. The route, awarded the Austrian Hiking Seal of Quality, leads you through varied landscapes to two of the most beautiful alpine pastures in the region.

Your tour starts at the Stupfer car park, where you ascend to the left into the forest and hike around 400 meters in altitude towards the Wetterstein Mountains. Then you have a choice: take the leisurely forest path or the steeper trail via the Wettersteinhütte to the Wangalm, which rewards you with regional specialties and magnificent views of Hohe Munde, Karwendel, and the villages in the valley.

Refreshed, you strap on your backpack again and follow the Wurziger Steig downhill towards Hämmermoosalm. Between quiet forests and the impressive mountain scenery, you enjoy the descent, cross the Salzbach – perfect for cooling your feet – and finally reach the wide alpine pasture area. Here, the Hämmermoosalm, awarded Alpine Hut of the Year 2025, awaits you with Tyrolean idyll, cowbells, and a sunny terrace. Afterwards, you hike relaxed out of the Gaistal to the Salzbach car park, where the Kneipp and water play area with loungers, a barefoot path, and water features invites you for a refreshing break.

The return route leads you along the Leutascher Ache back to the Stupfer car park, without any roads, but with plenty of nature. You might even encounter free-roaming dogs here, as this section is part of the dog off-leash zone. Alternatively, you can vary the tour: Start the day with an alpine brunch at the Hämmermoosalm, plan an overnight stay at the Wangalm, or let the area inspire you for a climbing tour. No matter how you decide – this loop in the Gaistal is guaranteed to remain in your memory for a long time.

Attention: The Wettersteinhütte will remain closed until further notice.

The small Wangalm in the Gaistal valley below the Gehrenspitze enchants with its original coziness and authentic alpine farming at 1,751 meters above sea level. Hearty Tyrolean delicacies and cool refreshments are served on the sun terrace or in the wood-paneled guest room.

Salzbach

Highlight • River

A bit of balance is required here when crossing the small stream. After all, a narrow wooden bridge leads across. But why not just take off your shoes and take the opportunity to refresh your feet?

Kneipp facility Salzbach

Highlight • Rest Area

The cool Kneipp cure unfolds its regenerative and refreshing effect best when treading water after a hike. The Kneippanlage Salzbach offers not only arm-immersion basins, a water-treading facility, and foot reflexology barefoot paths, but also shady seating and lounging areas. The correct application of the traditional Kneipp treatments is also clearly explained and described on information boards on site.

A super beautiful and delicious tour. 😊

Temperatures plummet: Yesterday it was 17°C, today it was cold and wet, the mountains white at the top. Few hikers, a soothing silence, and I slowly ascend until the view opens up further and further. Snow flurries, clouds come and go, and a rain shower passes below me. The alpine hut is in hibernation, the tea warms me, and the …

It's a shame that this wonderful hut will soon cease to exist as a tourist and hiking destination. The long-distance winter hikes, a fantastic tourist attraction, will also no longer be available in their current form. The tenants are being forced to abandon the Wetterstein Hut after 17 years.

On our last day in Leutasch we were able to go on a real mountain tour. Guests from our hotel had told us that the high trail from the Wettersteinhütte to the Hämmermoosalm was already passable, as there was only a little snow left. That sounded promising - so we decided to do this beautiful route.
About half of the …

560 meters in altitude on a 12 km long tour is more likely to be assigned to the easy category. After all, the hikes in the Eifel show similar values. So tour selected and hiked off. Here we hike 540 meters in altitude over the first three kilometers 😬😬.
Of course it can be done, but it's already sporty and …

Wonderful paths, some great root trail. Mega nice climb.

Beautiful round with great views. Ascent also possible via the road, but then definitely not as varied. Wetterstein Hütte in a perfect location. The way back via the Hämmermoosalm back to the car park is easy to walk. The Gaistal, always worthwhile.

This year we left at night and got there at 8 in the morning. After a small breakfast at MPreis, we immediately did our first, still moderate tour to warm up. Today we were surrounded by trail runners who completed an ultra (108 km) from the Zugspitze through the Wetterstein Mountains to Garmisch. Hats off to zugspitz-ultratrail.com
