The Gaistal Alpine Pasture Paradise lives up to its name: meadows, forests, and the Wetterstein Mountains merge here to form an impressive backdrop, while lively streams and regional culinary delights make your hiking experience perfect. The route, awarded the Austrian Hiking Seal of Quality, leads you through varied landscapes to two of the most beautiful alpine pastures in the region.
Your tour starts at the Stupfer car park, where you ascend to the left into the forest and hike around 400 meters in altitude towards the Wetterstein Mountains. Then you have a choice: take the leisurely forest path or the steeper trail via the Wettersteinhütte to the Wangalm, which rewards you with regional specialties and magnificent views of Hohe Munde, Karwendel, and the villages in the valley.
Refreshed, you strap on your backpack again and follow the Wurziger Steig downhill towards Hämmermoosalm. Between quiet forests and the impressive mountain scenery, you enjoy the descent, cross the Salzbach – perfect for cooling your feet – and finally reach the wide alpine pasture area. Here, the Hämmermoosalm, awarded Alpine Hut of the Year 2025, awaits you with Tyrolean idyll, cowbells, and a sunny terrace. Afterwards, you hike relaxed out of the Gaistal to the Salzbach car park, where the Kneipp and water play area with loungers, a barefoot path, and water features invites you for a refreshing break.
The return route leads you along the Leutascher Ache back to the Stupfer car park, without any roads, but with plenty of nature. You might even encounter free-roaming dogs here, as this section is part of the dog off-leash zone. Alternatively, you can vary the tour: Start the day with an alpine brunch at the Hämmermoosalm, plan an overnight stay at the Wangalm, or let the area inspire you for a climbing tour. No matter how you decide – this loop in the Gaistal is guaranteed to remain in your memory for a long time.
Attention: The Wettersteinhütte will remain closed until further notice.
