The trail typically starts in Dascio. While specific parking details aren't provided, Dascio is the common starting point for this section of the Antica Via Regina. It's advisable to check local information for designated parking areas in Dascio before your visit.
This trail is generally considered 'somewhat demanding' or 'un po' impegnativa'. While the main route involves a moderate elevation gain, sections can be exposed, steep, and potentially slippery, with unstable ground. A variant, like the 'Salto delle Capre,' is classified as 'EE' (Experienced Hikers) due to technical challenges. It's not ideal for beginners or young children, and trekking shoes are highly recommended.
The terrain is varied, featuring ancient cobbled mule tracks, some asphalt sections, and paths through wooded areas, including chestnut groves. You'll encounter both gentle descents and steep ascents. Be prepared for potentially exposed, steep, and slippery sections, especially where there are unstable or disconnected grounds and collapsed boulders.
You'll discover several notable spots. Highlights include the View of the Pian di Spagna from Sasso di Dascio, offering expansive vistas. Further along, you'll pass the Stone Bridge over the Valene Stream and the Waterfalls of the Valle Le Valene Stream. The trail also provides a beautiful View of Lake Mezzola. The ultimate destination is the historic San Fedelino Chapel and the nearby San Fedelino Beach, Lake Mezzola.
The trail can be enjoyed during most of the year, but spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant hiking conditions with milder temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer can be hot, and some sections might be more challenging in wet or icy winter conditions due to the exposed and potentially slippery terrain.
While specific regulations for dogs on this exact segment are not detailed, the trail passes through the Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola Nature Reserve. It's generally recommended to keep dogs on a leash in nature reserves to protect wildlife and ensure safety, especially given the challenging terrain in some sections.
There is no mention of a specific permit or entrance fee required to hike the Antica Via Regina: Dascio to San Fedelino trail itself. As it passes through the Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola Nature Reserve, standard nature reserve regulations apply, but typically there are no entrance fees for hiking trails within such reserves.
Yes, the route is part of the historic Antica Via Regina and also covers 100% of the Sentiero Life delle Alpi Retiche – Dal cigno alla pernice bianca. Additionally, sections of the trail overlap with parts of the Avvicinamento Vandea.
Yes, for those looking to vary their return, it is possible to take a boat back to Dascio from San Fedelino. This offers a unique perspective of the wild shores of Lake Mezzola and can be a pleasant alternative to hiking back.
The Antica Via Regina is a historically significant route that has served as a vital connection between Milan and the Alpine passes since Roman times. It was crucial for commerce and religious pilgrimages, and this section offers a blend of historical exploration and natural beauty.
The San Fedelino Chapel is a small Romanesque temple dating back to the 10th century. It's considered one of Lombardy's earliest examples of Romanesque art and holds traditional significance as the place where the bones of Saint Fedele were found. It's a key highlight at the end of this trail segment.
A really nice hike I've been wanting to do for a while. Challenging but very rewarding. Always in the Basque Country.
Nice path that runs along the Novate Mezzola lake. Alternation of alpine vegetation and Mediterranean scrub. It takes about 2 and a half hours to get to San Fedelino and if you want you can book the return by boat
It's a shame that when we reached the panoramic point the path was impassable due to brambles and fallen plants....... Too bad it will be for the next one
I left the car in the parking lot of the Dascio sports field and started the excursion from the village church. Long route for the overview of Lake Mezzola for which it is absolutely worth going to visit. Obligatory stop to admire the waterfall of the stream. Along the way you can find beautiful old trees, each indicated with a sign and the estimated age. In addition, there are several points where you can meet other hikers who try their hand at climbing. At a certain one there is a crossroads to reach the temple of San Fedelino: 20min EE (on land after the landslide) and 40min the longest route, however with a good difference in altitude to be taken into consideration on the way back, since the road to the temple along the stream it will have suffered a landslide and has been made more sloping at times. Definitely worth a visit as it is a quiet, pleasant and decidedly panoramic area. On the way back, same route.
