This route was planned by komoot.
The trail officially begins at the former funicular railway station, located near the historic Art Nouveau buildings of the Campo dei Fiori Grand Hotel complex. You can also access the trail from an intermediate point with parking available near the Bar-Ristorante Irma.
This moderate hike is approximately 10.4 kilometers (6.5 miles) long and generally takes about 3 hours and 13 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and stops for views.
The terrain is varied, featuring mostly accessible paths but requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. You'll encounter steps, unsurfaced tracks, and sections that snake across the northern slope of Cima Paradiso. Expect roots, rocks, and some narrow paths along ridges, with a short but challenging climb up to Punta di Mezzo.
You'll be treated to stunning panoramic vistas, including almost 360-degree views over the plains, the Varese valleys, and the Alps. Key highlights include the View from Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori, Mount Three Crosses, and the View from Forte di Orino. Don't miss the Punta di Mezzo (1,227 m) summit and the View of Valcuvia and the Alps. On clear days, you might even spot Milan and various lakes. The trail also passes through beautiful fir, beech, chestnut, and pine woods, and offers views of the Sacro Monte di Varese and the 'Scala nel Cielo'.
While classified as moderate, the trail requires good fitness and sure-footedness due to varied terrain, including steps, roots, and some challenging sections. It might be challenging for very young children or those new to hiking, but active families with some hiking experience could enjoy it.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it passes through the Parco Regionale Campo dei Fiori, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.
The trail is enjoyable in spring, summer, and autumn. Spring offers lush greenery and wildflowers, while autumn provides beautiful foliage. Summer is popular, but be prepared for warmer temperatures. Winter hiking is possible, but check conditions for snow and ice, especially at higher elevations.
No, there are typically no permits or entrance fees required to hike within the Parco Regionale Campo dei Fiori. However, always respect park regulations and leave no trace.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Significant portions of the trail align with the European Long distance path E1 - part Italy - Lombardy and the Via Verde Varesina Tappa 3. You'll also find sections that overlap with the Sentiero Nildo dal Zotto, Sentiero Panoramico, and La scala nel cielo.
The Campo dei Fiori Regional Park is known for its diverse fauna. While sightings are never guaranteed, you might spot red deer, wild boars, and various birds of prey. Keep an eye out, especially during quieter times of the day.
Please note that there is currently a temporary closure for a section of the trail between Campo dei Fiori and the junction of trail 307 and Piazzale Belvedere. A detour is in place, so be sure to follow signage and any local instructions to navigate this part of the route.
Parking is easy in front of the Osteria Irma. From there, an almost horizontal path leads along the entire ridge. At the end it goes up to the Orina peak with a wonderful viewpoint. The way back starts similarly until you go up to the Punta di Mezzo peak at 1227 m. This section is very steep, but also very scenic and beautiful. The path then leads back to the Osteria Irma. The food here is extremely tasty. The best ingredients are used here. We tried the pasta with truffles, pasta with porcini mushrooms and also the ribs. Everything incredibly delicious. A very nice tour that offers views on both sides of the mountain with Lake Maggiore and Lake Varese. --- Recommendations: "Hiking in the Harz - With 222 stamps to the hiking emperor". https://amzn.to/3VO8smK https://harz.soziales4u.de Crossing the Alps: 800 kilometers from Trieste to Oberstdorf: https://amzn.to/3GbVIjh https://soziales4u.de/viaalpina Hiking with children in the Harz: The Harzer Hexenstieg. 100 kilometers between fresh air and iPad.
