Hiking

Begin your hike from Colma di Sormano, starting on a wide dirt track that meanders through dense woods. The trail soon transitions to paths with consistent inclines, leading you through shaded woodlands, past chestnut and oak groves, and into rolling alpine pastures that burst with wildflowers in summer. As you climb, you will find numerous viewpoints, such as Terrabiotta, offering increasingly expansive landscapes. The final segment to Monte San Primo's summit features stony terrain and steep ascents, classifying this as a difficult hike. It covers 9.5 miles (15.4 km) with 1956 feet (596 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 5 hours and 3 minutes to complete, culminating in a full 360-degree view of Lake Como, Bellagio, and the distant Po Valley.

While komoot rates this as a difficult hike requiring very good fitness and sure-footedness, some sections, especially the initial parts through the woods, are considered less challenging. The route demands sturdy shoes and an adequate level of fitness for a multi-hour physical activity. Be prepared for a final, steeper push to the summit, though it is never overly exposed. Always check local conditions before you go, as weather can quickly change in mountainous areas.

Monte San Primo holds the distinction of being the highest peak in the Larian Triangle, standing at 1685 meters. This makes it a prime location for its unrivaled panoramas, widely regarded as some of the most scenic in Italy, extending to the Alps, including Monte Rosa, and the northern Apennines. The trail is also part of the famous "Dorsale del Triangolo Lariano," a longer hiking route connecting Como to Bellagio, offering a significant reward in views without extreme exertion.

From the 1,435 meters of Bocchetta di Terrabiotta there is a splendid view of the tip of Bellagio and the bifurcation of Lake Como. Its name Terrabiotta (Naked Earth) comes from the Como dialect. The name derives from the fact that the strong winds, which often whip here, make this area almost devoid of grass.

Monte San Primo Summit

Highlight • Summit

Monte San Primo is the highest mountain in the Larian triangle with its 1685 metres.
From the summit you can perfectly see the branching of Lake Como which forms an upside down Y.
On days without haze you can also admire the Po Valley and the Milanese area, as well as the main lakes in the area.

Two weeks ago, with the snow, even if little, it would have been something completely different, but the temperatures of the last 15 days have unfortunately melted everything.
Departure from the observatory from Colma, exactly at the arrival of the Muro di Sormano.
Everything is simple up to Alpe di Terrabiotta, then the lawn and pavement give way to mud, …

Yes, I've been to the summit of San Primo from the Colma di Sormano. It's the mountain that dominates the entire Larian triangle and its ridge, which extends from Como to Bellagio.
After the recent snowfall, I couldn't resist going there in the hope of a nice snowshoe hike, but that wasn't the case. It wasn't possible to use snowshoes …

On the way there, the route was on the ridge and on the way back the classic mule track. Only a very light sprinkling of snow, but no crampons needed

Very easy walk even if long, there is no water for the whole route. First part almost flat, a slight descent and then it starts to climb. On the way there we did the crests while on the way back the road. From the top you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Como, the Grigne and the Po Valley. …

Today Monte San Primo from Colma di Sormano! Nothing difficult or so demanding on a technical level since the approach to the summit takes place almost entirely along the Larian ridge, a wide path that continues uphill but with very little slope except a few meters below the summit where you have to walk the last 50 meters of altitude …
