The trailhead for this route is located on the North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Parking is available directly at the trailhead. Since the North Rim is generally less crowded than the South Rim, you'll often find more serene parking and hiking conditions here.
The full out-and-back hike to Green Mountain is approximately 6.9 to 7.2 miles (11.1 to 11.6 km) and typically takes around 3.5 hours to complete. If you opt for the shorter, easier segment to Exclamation Point Viewpoint, it's about a 3-mile (4.8 km) roundtrip, which can be done in significantly less time.
The trail offers options for different fitness levels. The segment to Exclamation Point Viewpoint is generally considered easy to moderately strenuous and is a great option for beginners or families. However, be aware that Exclamation Point does not have railings, so caution is advised, especially with children. Continuing past this point to Green Mountain Summit makes the full trail strenuous.
You'll traverse plateaus with sagebrush, Gambel oak, and pinyon pine, transitioning into a pinyon-juniper forest. The path is generally unpaved and can be narrow in sections. Expect dramatic canyon views, especially from viewpoints like View of Black Canyon from North Vista Trail and Exclamation Point Viewpoint, looking down into Pinyon Draw and the inner canyon.
The trail is home to a variety of wildlife. You might spot hummingbirds, hawks, lizards, snakes, rabbits, and chipmunks. There's also a possibility of seeing larger animals like bears and deer. The air often carries the distinct scent of sage as you walk through this high desert landscape.
The North Vista Trail is accessible for much of the year. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. While winter hiking is possible, be prepared for snow and ice, which can make conditions more challenging. Summer can be hot, so an early start is recommended.
Dogs are generally allowed on paved roads, in campgrounds, and on the Rim Rock Trail, Cedar Point Nature Trail, and Warner Point Nature Trail on the South Rim. However, pets are not permitted on inner canyon trails or wilderness areas, which includes much of the North Vista Trail as it enters the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Wilderness shortly after starting. Always check the latest regulations on the NPS website before your visit.
Yes, there is an entrance fee to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This fee covers access to both the North and South Rims. You can find detailed information on current fees and any specific permit requirements for wilderness use on the National Park Service website.
The trail is renowned for its exceptional views. You'll encounter the View of Black Canyon from North Vista Trail and the dramatic Exclamation Point Viewpoint, offering direct views into the canyon and the Gunnison River below. For those who continue, the Green Mountain Summit provides expansive panoramic vistas of the Black Canyon and surrounding mountain ranges, including the San Juan Mountains and Grand Mesa.
The North Vista Trail is primarily an out-and-back route. You hike to your chosen destination, such as Exclamation Point Viewpoint or Green Mountain Summit, and then return along the same path.
Yes, while primarily following the North Vista Trail for 99% of its length, the route also passes through sections of the Pinyon Draw trail for about 14% of its duration.
