This loop is known for its challenging and varied terrain. You'll encounter steep, rocky paths, especially during the initial ascent from the parking lot up Mount Beacon, which often starts with stairs following the old Beacon Incline Railway path. Some sections may have loose gravel, while others offer a milder forest walk. Sturdy footwear with good ankle support is highly recommended due to the uneven surfaces.
Parking is typically available near the trailhead at the base of Mount Beacon. It's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends or during peak seasons, as parking lots can fill up quickly. There are no shuttles specifically for this trailhead.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trails within Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve, including this loop. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Please remember to pack out any waste.
No, there are typically no permits or entrance fees required to hike the trails within Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve, including the Mount Beacon, Scofield Ridge, and Fishkill Ridge Loop. It's free to access.
This loop offers several notable points of interest. You'll pass Brook Falls early on, and enjoy panoramic views from Bald Hill. A major highlight is the South Beacon Mountain and Firetower, which offers exceptional 360-degree views. You'll also see the North Beacon Mountain and DAR Monument, and remnants of the historic Beacon Incline Railway.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but the fall foliage season is particularly stunning with vibrant colors. Spring offers lush greenery and flowing waterfalls. Summer can be hot and humid, so an early start is recommended. While winter hiking is possible, be prepared for icy conditions, especially on steep sections, and check trail conditions beforehand.
The Mount Beacon, Scofield Ridge, and Fishkill Ridge Loop is approximately 15.8 kilometers (9.8 miles) long and typically takes around 5 to 7 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the viewpoints and historical sites.

Yes, the city of Beacon is accessible by Metro-North train from Grand Central Terminal in NYC. From the Beacon train station, you can typically take a local taxi or ride-share service a short distance to the Mount Beacon trailhead.
Given the trail's difficulty and length, you should bring plenty of water (there are no reliable water sources on the trail), sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, a map or GPS device (cell reception can be spotty), snacks, sun protection, and layers of clothing suitable for changing weather conditions. Trekking poles can also be very helpful for the steep ascents and descents.
Yes, the city of Beacon offers a vibrant main street with numerous cafes, restaurants, and breweries. Many hikers enjoy grabbing a meal or a drink in town before or after their hike, as it's just a short drive from the Mount Beacon trailhead.
From the urban jungle of New York City we went to the mountains in the Hudson Valley. From the parking lot in Beacon it goes straight up the mountain. The tour leads over narrow paths to streams, smaller waterfalls, rock plateaus up to the fire tower. In again there are great views over the Hudson Valley. The NYC skyline can be seen on the horizon. The paths are narrow and paved. Sometimes difficult to see. You have to pay attention to the markers on the trees. I found the tour very challenging. Some climbing was also necessary. The tour is very nice and the views across the Hudson Valley all the way to New York is awesome.
