Hiking

The Brocken circular hiking trail is an easy path that ends either at the Brocken train station or at the highest point.

Well-illustrated information boards provide information about the history and special features of the Brocken, as well as its unique flora and fauna. If you want to know more, you can look around the Brockenhaus National Park Visitor Center and then have a drink in a small café.

Also recommended is the free daily ranger tour. Current information can be found on the national park website.

Devil's Pulpit and Witches' Altar

Highlight • Natural Monument

Teufelskanzel and Hexenaltar are legendary granite rock formations that can be clearly seen from the Brocken plateau. They are located in the middle of the Harz National Park and are not accessible for nature conservation reasons. According to tradition, the devil himself is said to have preached to the Brocken guests from the devil's pulpit. Goethe also mentions the stratification of the rocks in one of his travelogues from the Harz Mountains. Due to its striking appearance, the witch altar has always been a popular motif for photos and postcards. According to legend, there was a witches' dance floor not far from the witches' altar, where Walpurgis Night was celebrated on the night of May 1st.

Brocken Railway Station

Highlight • Rest Area

The HSB (Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) have parked a (red) tank car with extinguishing water on the Brocken for possible accidents. The wagon stands on a trolley, in winter it goes into the valley.
This tank car was only in Drei Annen Hohne and was subsequently marked by the HSB.
It is used solely for the extinguishing agent reserve and is shut down again in winter.

Brocken Summit

Highlight • Summit

The highest peak in the Harz above the tree line. Certainly not the most exciting climb on a mountain bike, but still a must, simply because it's there. ;-)

A journey through the magic and diversity of the mountain: A visit to Northern Germany's highest mountain is not complete without a stop at the architecturally striking Brockenhaus National Park Visitor Center. A multimedia adventure through the eventful history and unique natural beauty of this fascinating mountain awaits Brocken visitors on three floors.

With an area of almost 250 square kilometers, the national park stretches around the Brocken – from Herzberg in the south to Bad Harzburg and Ilsenburg (Harz) in the north. A large part of the area is covered by spruce and beech forests; moors are also typical.

Further information about the national park and the Brockenhaus can be found here: nationale-naturlandschaften.de/gebiete/nationalpark-harz

We are spending the night on the Brocken tonight. We took the narrow-gauge railway up from Nordhausen. Tomorrow we'll take the train back down... We have lovely weather up here... Now after 6.30 p.m. we're completely alone here...
