To avoid the 28°C forecast for today, I headed back to the "Hohe Schrecke" nature reserve early today. This time I opted for the Wiegental Wilderness Trail. It starts at the hiking trail 🅿 in the small village of Hauteroda. From here, it's about 3km between meadows and currently blooming rapeseed fields on a section of the "Große Rundweg Hohe Schrecke" (Great Circular Trail) up into the forest. Then the approximately 5km long Wiegental Wilderness Trail begins and offers the perfect introduction to the world of the "primeval forests of tomorrow." The primeval forest, with its beeches, some up to 200 years old, and oaks, 160 years old, and abundant deadwood, provides a home for a variety of beetles and other insects. It's no wonder that the endangered Barbastelle bat and the greater mouse-eared bat have once again found their preferred hunting grounds here.
