Värkenskull (Ferkenskull)

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

At the Ferkenskull (dialect: Värkenskull), here in the field name area. Translated, Ferkenskull means pig cow or pig wallow. Pigs were probably kept here and they stood in the mud or wild boars gathered here. Who knows?

A great rest area with a bench, table and a beautiful view. There are also horses, what more could you ask for?

Trail Reviews

collignon Annie
August 21, 2022, Sur les traces des anciennes frontières — Randonner en famille dans l'Est de la Belgique

We start from a convenient parking lot, on the corner of Augustinerstrasse, at the entrance to Köpchen, just next to the Aachen woods in the south of the city. In the middle of a magnificent forest of several km², there are many possibilities for trails where you can discover beautiful beech trees with deformed trunks and gigantic pines that flirt with the clouds. The circuit is well maintained and leads to the Cyclops stones which have formed from petrified sand. When these emerge from the ground, there is something "extraterrestrial" or "mystical" and the name in connection with Cyclops does the rest. The silence is surprising, only the cries of the children a few km further announce a site that no one has forgotten, but that the games of the kids in the middle of the dragon's teeth of the Siegfried line, bring back to a hope of lasting peace. On the way back we will eat a croque at the KuKukbistrobar, opposite the car park, and for our happiness, the atmosphere is pleasant and the food is organic.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 hiking boots Yesterday I walked the circular route with heads as advertised on Grenzrouten.eu. I checked it 10 times: I walked the correct route (even according to the signs on site), but it is 6.4km to Komoot and not 9.5km - I think there is an error on the border routes page, because the specified 1.5h would also mean 6.3km / h, i.e. faster than the highest "professional" level from Komoot - that's already hyper-fast. About the route itself: super beautiful! It is very worth it. Especially with the art exhibition on Grenzkunstroute.eu, which is partially covered, you can see a lot more than "just" nature. Small downer: the southern part of Belgium runs through a housing estate; paved road and occasional car traffic included. Next time I would probably skip the south-western "tip" of the route and walk north of the Rotsiefbach along the edge of the forest (you can see that better on the border route map than on the Komoot map). That makes the route (even) shorter, but you don't miss a lot and the proportion of nature is higher.

Short hike crossing the Belgian-German border several times with beautiful forest passages. You will also pass by an anti-tank defense line made up of large conical concrete blocks. Looking closely, you can see that these constructions extend for several hundred meters in the countryside along the border.
