From the castle, you walk along the magnificent avenue of beech trees - a natural extension of this historic jewel. You then continue through a forest to the now-defunct village of Petit-Modave. At the behest of King Leopold II, springs were once tapped in the area to ensure particularly healthy and pure water for Brussels. The price was the destruction of the village.
The walk takes you along a pretty path that winds through the alder undergrowth, along the nature reserve. The area is humid and the soil fertile. Once you reach the top, you walk past a large farm cut off from the outside world and right through its cultivated fields. Once you get back down, a
surprise awaits you. Val Tibiémont gives the impression that time has stood still here. This forgotten village, surrounded by a forest and through which the Hoyoux river flows, offers one of the most beautiful images of the Condroz region, where nothing disturbs the peaceful tranquility.
You will certainly have the same impression when you visit the Château de Modave, a magnificent 17th-century building perched on a rocky outcrop and part of the major cultural heritage of Wallonia. The castle towers over the valley and offers a beautiful view over the Condroz region.

Modave Castle perches on its rocky spur overlooking the beautiful Hoyoux Valley. It overlooks 450 hectares of natural beauty and watches over the drinking water reserves. It will be the starting point for our rather hilly excursion. This walk starts at the foot of the information board (you'll find several marked trails there), with your back to the castle. It will take you through the woods leading down to the nature park and the fresh waters of the Hoyoux River. This rich and tranquil area is protected due to the numerous drinking water catchments located there. Due to water catchment around 1905, the inhabitants of the village of Petit Modave were gradually expropriated, which contributed to the disappearance of the village. If time permits, be sure to take off your sneakers and dip your feet in this river, the fastest in Belgium. This peaceful little spot is ideal for picnicking, relaxing, and swimming. Please note, the site is protected, so be discreet and, above all, leave no trace of your visit. Then leave the castle grounds via the beautiful avenue. The dense forests and lawns bordering the park are teeming with precious biodiversity. Head towards the hamlet of Tibiémont, passing through the magnificent Val ford, and then arriving at the site of the former Survillers castle and its beautiful viewpoint. The return route follows the ridges and then a magnificent wooded avenue that will gently lead you back to the Château de Modave. Very well-marked route *Practical information Parking and departure: Rue du parc 6, 4577 Modave Difficulty: Medium Marking: Red diamond
very nice little walk to do around the castle of Modave. The circuit passes through woods and along fields, taking paths, tracks, small local roads or beautiful alleys. We cross 2 fords dry, including one on the Hoyoux. It is a beautiful region to visit, quite hilly. The walk can easily be combined with the visit of the castle of Modave which I highly recommend https://www.modave-castle.be/ The circuit, a little hilly, remains accessible to everyone; departure from the castle car park (free access)
