Modern sights to natural beauty – discover Spandau by bike

Cycling

This 24-kilometer tour is all about architecture, with a few excursions into the idyllic natural surroundings of Spandau. You will drive to the remarkable Siemensstadt housing estate, a monument to Berlin Modernism. You will pass by the impressive Berlin Olympic Stadium from the 1930s, enjoy the idyll of "Little Venice" and finally discover the beautiful old town of Spandau.

That's exactly where it starts. Driving along the Havel, you leave the old town of Spandau behind you, cross the river and cycle across the small Havel island of Eiswerder. On the picturesque Berlin-Spandau shipping canal, you will "cross over" to the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district and head for Siemensstadt. It's worth keeping your eyes open and taking a look at the interesting architecture of Berlin Modernism. If you feel like taking a break, you can take a detour to the Jungfernheide public park, where you can rest at the lido or even jump into the water.

Let's move on. At the Berlin Olympic Stadium, you can marvel again - if you stand right in front of it, the building is pretty impressive. The adjacent "mirror forest" on the Murellenberg, on the other hand, is more thought-provoking: the many mirrors that are set up here are a reminder of the executed war deserters of the Second World War. You can reach the forest with a short detour.

Back in the Spandau district, you now cycle through Tiefwerder and it becomes really idyllic here. It's not for nothing that the area is also called "Little Venice". Small canals, picturesque boats and lots of greenery - it's really bearable here! And maybe you'd like to discover it all from a different perspective: this is an ideal starting point for boat tours with a paddle boat or kayak.

Whether by boat or by bike – back in the old town of Spandau you are guaranteed to find a cozy restaurant where you can fortify yourself and round off this beautiful tour in an atmospheric way.

Spandau Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

It's great to stroll through the historic old town of Spandau. Numerous restaurants, water, bridges, churches and old houses.

The narrower the streets, the quieter and more contemplative it becomes. You discover exciting historical details and evidence on every corner. So to speak, many small highlights hidden in one big one 😶‍🌫️

The twelve-kilometer-long Berlin-Spandau shipping canal, also known as the Hohenzollern Canal, connects the two rivers Spree and Havel. The old tributary is particularly idyllic and is no longer used by very large ships. Instead, small motorboats chug along here when the weather is good and the local rowing club trains here regularly. A beautiful place to unwind.

In the heart of Charlottenburg lies the spacious, well-maintained lido with a fine sandy beach and partially shaded lawns.

Großsiedlung Siemensstadt (Ring Estate)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Siemensstadt housing estate is one of the six residential complexes of the "Berlin Modernism". All of the housing estates were the architectural response to the housing shortage after the First World War and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Well-known architects such as Walter Gropius, Otto Bartning, Hugo Häring, Fred Forbát and Paul Rudolf Henning were involved in the planning of the apartment blocks, which were mainly home to Siemens employees. The buildings in the Siemensstadt housing estate were all planned in the "New Building" style. This architectural style was also the ideal basis of the Bauhaus school and shaped European architecture for over half a century.

From here you can easily get to the Jungfernheide public park. The park is located north of the housing estate, where you can switch off wonderfully and enjoy a bit of nature.

Olympiastadion Berlin

Highlight • Monument

An interesting, somewhat impressive place with a long history. Home of Herta BSC – with a bit of luck you might run into the football pros training in the nearby forest around the “Murellenberg”. ;)

Memorial for the executed deserters of the Second World War on the Murellenberg. Seems totally unreal. An impressive place to commemorate.

When you consider that you are still in Berlin and you are sitting here by a canal where the beavers collect the trees for dinner, I think that this beautiful corner can definitely be called a highlight or an insider tip.
