After a two-year break, we're continuing our Roman Trails in the Odenwald. The detour to the "Heunebuckel" guard post is a no-brainer, as the remains are barely visible. The last two pictures show the museum in Wagenschwend, which is well worth a visit, and its opening hours. It contains many original finds from the Limes region.
Starting from the Balsbach hiking car park, always follow the "R" marking. Right at the beginning of the comfort tour, a short detour to the former Roman sentry post at the Heunebuckel can be made. After the detour to the Heunebuckel, follow the signposts towards Balsbach. The next highlight of the route is the stone monument of Victoria, which has been reconstructed true to the original (can also be seen in the Wagenschwend Museum). The former monastery can be seen in the center of Balsbach, which has a moving history. In the further course you pass numerous historical wayside shrines, a Jupiter bench that invites you to rest and a reconstructed Limes palisade. In Wagenschwend you should definitely visit the village museum .
https://youtu.be/UTkr6H-iTPI Hello everyone, Today Anne and I took advantage of the nice weather and walked in Roman footsteps again. In other words: We hiked another Roman path: the Venus path 🥰 The path is 8.5km long and in our opinion the first 2/3 is a little better than the last third. Overall, the path was very nice to walk, especially in this weather, similar to the Mars path 🙃 Some smaller sights, beautiful views and an overall route that wasn't too demanding offered us a decent overall package of hiking fun 😎 Above all, it was exactly what we expected after "studying" the official flyer 😉 Kind regards and have fun hiking everyone 🙂 Tobias
Venus is the goddess of love. She is often depicted with a dolphin. Starting from the hiking car park, always follow the "R" marking. Right at the beginning of the tour you can take a short detour to the former. Roman sentry post at the Heunebuckel. At this point, a path from the Neckar to the Main reached the area of the Electorate of Mainz. In the late Middle Ages, the Kurmainz administration maintained a guard house here, controlled traffic and levied customs duties. A barrier about 400 m long forced travelers to cross the border at the station and not bypass it unseen. The border barrier consisted of two ditches 1.5 m deep and embankments thrown up behind them. On these ramparts was planted an impenetrable hedge of interlaced hornbeams and thornbushes. The Hag was maintained by the population of Cent Mudau in corvage. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the inhabitants of the surrounding villages damaged the checkpoint. A few years later, the officials of the Palatinate in Mosbach and Lohrbach had the Hag dragged through their subjects, and it was never put up again. After the detour to the Heunebuckel, follow the regular trail markings in the direction of Balsbach. The next highlight of the route is the Roman stone monument of Victoria (can also be seen in the Wagenschwend Museum). In the further course you pass many other sights such as historical wayside shrines, Jupiter bench to rest and a Limes pallisade. The Balsbach Monastery is also located in the center of Balsbach. Balsbach Monastery: The convent of the Clarissen Capuchins came from Dresden-Klotzsche. In 1947 he had to give way to political pressure in what was then the eastern zone and temporarily found accommodation in Oberzell near Würzburg. Two years later, the brothers Otto and Karl Lenz from Balsbach gave the sisters a new home in their parents' house. A Marienkapelle had stood on the property since the early 1930s. In the years that followed, the monastery complex was built. After the death of the two brothers in 1964, the chapel and house were demolished and the branch and monastery church "Christkönig" with the secondary patrons St. Francis and St. Clara erected. The last phase of construction was completed in 1993. In 2015 the sisters moved to Gengenbach, 66 years of monastery history in Balsbach and in the region came to an end. The museum in Wagenschwend not only presents finds from Roman times, but also a piece of local history. The museum was furnished with great attention to detail. A replica of the relief of the goddess of victory Victoria is also in the collection. The original was found in 1896 by the Reich Limes Commission at the small fort in Robern and is located in the Roman Museum in Osterburken. Source: TG Odenwald
Starting point: Hiking car park behind Balsbach (follow the monastery road out of Balsbach) Very nice, comfortable hiking trail with hardly any inclines. The first three kilometers run through dense forest in the shade. From Balsbach onwards, sections in the forest alternate with open meadows and fields. Especially on the open stretches, you are rewarded with fantastic views all around. The signage and quality of the trail, like the rest of the Roman trails, is outstanding! Absolutely recommended! As we wanted a little "more", we simply combined this hike with the Roman trail in Walldürn: a total of around 15 km to hike with a 30-minute "driving break" between the two starting points. Perfect for us!
The short tour on the Roman Trail was really nice...
Beautiful, varied tour. So I have the 3rd stamp for the Roman passport.
