The Wasserkuppe is the cradle of gliding. Why? On the extra tour to the local recreation area Guckaisee, we learn how the dream of flying came true for us humans.
On the sporty Guckaisee extra tour, we explore the highest mountain in the Rhön and one of the most beautiful lakes in our No. 1 hiking world in one go. We start at the Wasserkuppe (see the author's tip). Let's enjoy the exciting take-off and landing maneuvers of the gliders! Then it continues past the popular summer toboggan run in the direction of Abtsrodaer Kuppe.
It soon becomes quieter and we enjoy our incredibly scenic hike past the striking radome domes of the Wasserkuppe, the fairytale meadow dotted with colorful paragliders to the aviator monument.
After a breather at the information boards, we tackle the distinctive horse's head. Once at the top, we are rewarded with a spectacular view of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön. Maybe even a paraglider whizzes past close above our heads.
Curious about how our tour continues? Then on to the Feldberg and the Schafstein with the largest basalt block heap in the Rhön, the only naturally forest-free habitat in the Rhön.
What's that glowing so alluringly in the distance? The local recreation paradise Guckaisee crowns our eventful active day.
Tip:
A must is a visit to the globally unique German Gliding Museum with model flights on the Wasserkuppe!

According to the Polar 860 HM, it feels more appropriate 🙈. The tour is not for midsummer 🌞, unless you like it - 2/3 outdoors, so no shady forest 😱
Hats off, Rhön Club. Well-planned and sensationally well-signposted routes can be found here. Today's tour (we simply followed the "G" of the Guckaisee extra tour) was scenically diverse, offered great views and regularly brought us up to operating temperature with the climbs. Milseburg is on the list for tomorrow. PS: We left out the final detour to the Schafstein today, because we visited it incognito yesterday. Curious? https://www.komoot.de/tour/927801009?ref=avs&share_token=aBFsaiHefraudJ9fWZfhyA3vVrpd046geXbyI3nIb5LTPKJ3bG
Something to celebrate again today, we hit 1,000 km hiked for this year 🏆 you can't stop celebrating 🥂 We start on the Wasserkuppe at a very pleasant 17 degrees 🥶A panoramic tour around the summit ⛰and to the plane 🧑✈️Monument that we have all to ourselves. On the way we meet volunteers who dig up the lupine ⛏ Beautiful as it is, it doesn't belong here and kills the plants of the poor meadows because it enriches the soil with nitrogen ☠️Hiking educates 👍🏼 The horse's head 🐴 is in my stomach, height is not my thing 😵💫 Up is no problem, the view is of course a dream. 🏔 Down the other side ⬇️ is really not mine at all 🥹 but I can do it 💪 Then we descend on beautiful root paths to the Guckaisee ⬇️ and after a circumnavigation we realize that everything is still closed 🤷🏻♀️ So the same on the other side steeply up again ⬆️ and back to Obernhausen ⬇️ Here we take a short break in the Fulda source 🍻 and are the only hikers 🥾 between bikers 🏍 😂 We continue on the Feldberg, where we find and enjoy a 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Panorama Vesperstelle . We continue on the well signposted extra tour. @mauntenbeiker , I've now also experienced the source of a river! 😊 Amazing that the trickle should become the Fulda. Shortly afterwards we are surprised that the tour makes another detour shortly before the end. We briefly think about the heat..... but then we walk it, the dangling, what luck 🍀👍🏼The Schafstein 🐑🪨 is a wonderful primeval forest natural forest reserve and you can admire impressive basalt block seas here. Exactly how fascinating yesterday was what nature can do! So between us Komootlers, if Wasserkuppe, then definitely take a look at the Schafstein! At km 21 I stop the tour🪫😱 It's better to save one km too little than lose the whole tour! How Ms. Komoot used up two loads 🔋🔋 today will remain her secret 🤫. Extra tour Guckaisee, absolutely recommendable 👍🏼

Today was my fourth time on this beautiful and challenging hiking route. Unfortunately without the eagle monument and Abtsroder Kuppe. The other 5 wanted to take the direct route for a cool drink. This marks the end of the extended hiking weekend of the Netwalkers led by Sabine Holicki. It was nice!!!
Due to the weather forecast, I didn't do the Rheinsteig with a bivouac overnight stay, but spontaneously decided to go to the Röhn for a "day hike". Today was the extra tour around the Guckaisee. Varied hike once to the Wasserkuppe. Past the radome on the Wasserkuppe, on to the Pferdskopf and then down to the Guckaisee. From there back up to the Fuldaquelle and a detour to the Schafstein with a view of the Blockmeer. Back towards the starting point and in the Fliegercafe we first hissed a cold wheat bowl 😅
Almost a year ago we wanted to run the Guckaisee extra tour for the first time, but then had to stop drenched. It was also very foggy back then. Now the second attempt today. And now everything was right. Despite the sun it wasn't too warm, despite Sunday it was almost empty on the track. Most of the people who, like us, parked at the Guckaisee were probably swimming in the lake and not hiking. We walked the circle counter-clockwise and found it more pleasant than the other way around. At the Fulda spring there was no one but us. I could hardly believe it. In addition, we were on the Schafstein on the basalt glacier for the first time today. That was very impressive. A stamp point there was there too - but nothing to stamp on. Then something occurred to me 🙄. Our stamina has improved considerably through our three hikes over the Rheinsteig. The heavy climbs of today's extra tour were easy today in contrast to our last attempt. Training pays off.

The extra tour is no longer officially signposted, the G has been removed everywhere because the new Wasserkuppe extra tour covers part of the route. So please use the navigation here😅
