Trail Reviews

Uta & Andreas
June 12, 2024, Extratour Ostheimer - Ostheim/Rhön

This premium hiking trail lives up to its name. Wonderful panoramas and paths. Meadows and a variety of flowers everywhere. It was a real pleasure to walk this trail.

Starting point: Ostheim, Burgstraße (at the waterworks) Our entrance is the car park at the waterworks below the Lichtenburg. From here, the extra tour takes us through the corridor of the so-called "Rauen Stein". A short ascent takes you to the Römersbühl. Here the path runs through a pine forest. The next attraction along the way cannot be overlooked: the mighty double oak, an impressive natural monument. Now it's getting adventurous: We manage the sometimes steep ascent to the summit of Weyhershauck. Here, too, we enjoy a wonderful view. The educational boards tell us what is crawling and fleeing on these nutrient-poor grassland areas, e.g. B. orchid, silver thistle and many species of butterflies. The bench at the memorial cross is perfect for a snack. The tour continues through a varied landscape to the Lichtenburg ruins, a managed castle complex from the 12th century. On a narrow path we follow the path in a southerly direction back to the starting point of the extra tour.

At "only" 7 kilometers long, the Ostheimer is one of the shortest extra tours in the Rhön. If you have already collected all the tours or are looking for a nice Sunday afternoon tour, this is the place for you. The path first leads downhill over calcareous grassland and then climbs up again briefly and, as it were, walks around the village with the church. You make an arc through the forest, past the double oak tree and then arrive at a small pond. There you climb very steeply through stepped, splintered limestone terrain. There is a risk of slipping here when it is wet. I definitely recommend good hiking shoes with a decent profile. After the steep, sweaty ascent, you are rewarded with a view of Ostheim. The highlight of the tour, the Lichtenburg, can now be seen on the mountain spur. Passing the Weyershauck it goes downhill again, again this week I pass an emu enclosure (comp. Rottenberg and Feldkahl 🇪🇺). From now on the path climbs again. Passing a spring, an old cobblestone path leads up to the castle. Especially now in autumn the leaves rustle very pleasantly here and the sun warms with its rays. In the castle there is a small restaurant with a tiny dining room and sun terrace. The menu isn't particularly long (which in itself wouldn't be a bad thing) and unfortunately doesn't have any vegetarian options. Too bad. 😕 So I'll stick with my non-alcoholic wheat beer. From the castle, it's a pleasant descent down narrow paths. After about 20 minutes you will reach the parking lot again.

Today we ran the Ostheimer Extratour for the first time. It started from Burgstrasse/Am rauhen Stein parking lot on the left side in four descents and ascents over beautiful limestone grasslands high up on the Weyershauk and to a beautiful rest area of the fruit and horticultural association. The last, somewhat steeper climb leads below the Lichtenburg (currently closed due to renovations) and then back down to the left side of the small road. Really nice circular route that I can highly recommend!

Today we continued with the next extra tour. Since I had an injury to my knee, I haven't been able to do any tours lately, so I decided to take the shortest of the extra tours. It's a very clear recommendation. It runs through the limestone area, so there are rare plants and very beautiful flowers. Then there was lunch at the Lichterburg, very tasty. The castle of lights is a ruin in very good condition. CLEAR RECOMMENDATION! Greetings 🙋‍♂️ P.S. Image descriptions will follow in case the names of the plants I photographed are still unknown.

Very nice easy hike around the Lichtenburg near Ostheim in front of the Rhön - with charming company :-) The extra tour is very well signposted and can be managed by anyone. There are countless short breaks along the entire circular tour - always with a wonderful view of the Rhönberge mountains all around. Finally, a small cold drink in the Lichtenburg.
