This tour starts at the Wendelinuskapelle and leads into the Obernauer Wald to the Waldkapelle. Via the Judenpfad, below the Jewish cemetery, you will reach the orchards with a view of Aschaffenburg. From there, you will cross the town to reach the lock, a modern industrial architecture. Your last stop is the Hauptstraße, framed by historic buildings, before you reach your starting point again.

Follow the marking of the yellow EU boat on a blue background.

Judenpfad in the Spessart

Highlight • Trail

The Jewish path leads from the Obernauer chapel to the Jewish cemetery on the nearby Bischberg. There are a number of Jewish paths or Jewish wells in the Spessart. Where do these designations come from? The Archaeological Spessart Project has been researching this for several years. It is now known that these paths were not only used by Jews for burials near cemeteries. Rather, it shows that the cattle trade in the Spessart, but also nationwide, has been organized by Jews for centuries. A valuable source for research are the municipal livestock contract books from the 19th century, in which the purchase and sale of livestock was recorded in detail.

Obernau Goat Fountain

Highlight • Monument

The landmark of the town, the Geißenbrunnen (Goat Fountain), was erected in 1998.
The saying from the Obenau cultural trail also fits: „In Obernau, the sky is blue, the billy goat dances with his wife".

Rain was forecast for many regions around Offenbach today, so I chose the area with the least rain and followed an EU cultural ship again 😊

"Anyone who knows the Obernau "Gaasebrunne" knows what is meant by this: goats used to be found in many home gardens in Obernau. The reason for this lies in the position that Obernau occupies between town and country.

The proximity to Aschaffenburg determined the orientation early on - whether in ancient times the monastery of St. Peter and Alexander or …

...the goat dances with his wife." The background to this rhyme can be read on the information board at the beginning/end of this path.
It was a varied tour - apart from the path to the forest chapel and the city area - mostly very beautiful forest and meadow paths, great views and a lot of knowledge to go.

Obernau is also listed on the so-called Maskoop map from around 1575. Striking are the many vines that stretch north-west. Winegrowing, which was documented in Obernau as early as the 14th century, has now completely disappeared. What has remained are the vineyard terraces facing the Main and the “cross
