Hiking

The Patscherkofel is the local mountain of Innsbruck - and thanks to the cable car, it can easily be reached without long climbs. In addition, there is one of the largest pine forests in the Alps on the wide summit ridge and the wide slopes. On the signposted Zirbenweg you can explore the forest on your own and be spoiled on the way again and again with beautiful views of the Tyrolean capital. The hiking trail has been awarded the Tyrolean Mountain Path Seal of Approval and is also ideal for families.

At the beginning of the hike you glide from Igls with the gondolas of the Patscherkofelbahn up to the mountain station. This is where the Zirbenweg begins. First it goes over open mountain meadows and then into the light mountain pine forest. The natural trail meanders gently up and down the ridge between Patscherkofel and Neunerspitze. On the way you can also plan a rest in the cozy Bochebenhütte.

Alternatively, you wait with your retreat to the end of the tour, where you - surrounded by vast alpine meadows - the Tulfeinalm receives. Just a few minutes from the Alm, the Glungezer Bahn takes you down to Tulfes. From here there is a bus connection back to the starting point in Igls or just to Innsbruck.

Patscherkofelbahn Mountain Station

Highlight • Rest Area

The brand new Patscherkofelbahn has been running from Igls to 1,956 meters since 2017. Even at the mountain station you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Inn Valley and Innsbruck. Especially practical if you want to hike the Zirbenweg: There is a combined ticket for the ascent with the Patscherkofelbahn, the descent with the Glugenzerbahn and the subsequent bus transfer. You can find more information at patscherkofelbahn.at/de/sommer#sommer.

Patscherkofel Mountain Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Even if the name is a bit misleading, the Patscherkofel-Schutzhaus is a full-fledged and cozy mountain lodge with nice overnight accommodations. Especially after sunset you have a magical view of the Inn Valley and the brightly lit Innsbruck from up here. Also on a day trip worth a visit, because you can spoil yourself here with a delicious snack.

A small pond on the Zirbenweg high above the Inntal. From the bank above the lake you have a first-class view of Innsbruck.

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Incredibly beautiful mountain trail with amazing great nature. Take a camera with you and go best at a time when the rush of almighty flowers. The whole way is full of it. The rocks are also a real eye-catcher. They often look as if someone had purposely put them down in blocks. The pine pines are also great to look at if they grow from the smallest crevices or "directly" on stone.

On the way there is still a small highlight for me: You can deviate a few meters from the path (small dangling, from the normal path of clearly visible) and go through a "cave" of boulders.

Generally, very sturdy footwear and partially stable footing are necessary. In principle, the path can also be gone by children and older or untrained people, since the biggest difficulty here are a few shorter, narrow nature trails and many stone paths (chunks, plates, ...).

Trail Reviews

Rosina S.
August 28, 2024, Zirbenweg Patscherkofel

Beautiful hike on an easy path at an altitude of 2000m with a great panorama and beautiful pine trees. Thanks to the combined ticket for the cable car and bus shuttle, you don't have to go back the same way.

From Patscherkofel take the bus to Tulfes, then take the gondola up there. The Zirbenweg is a beautiful hiking trail about 7.5km long. With slight ups and downs. Even though it is an easy hike, I still recommend sturdy shoes. It goes over hill and dale! The view is fantastically beautiful and the cheese dumplings at the Patscherkofel Schutzhaus round it all off.

Our friends wanted to hike the Zirbenweg trail. So...here's to another one...but no matter: the Zirbenweg is always beautiful!

PARK N47.22263° E11.42688° Patscherkofelbahn car park 6€ fee, which will be refunded if you use the train WAYS mostly sunny alpine trail with only minor inclines/declines. It is best to do it during the week / off-season, as it is very popular with tourists. On the other side then take the train down and the bus back to the Patscherkofel train Note: There is a special Zirbenweg combined ticket caches The Zirbenweg round with good hiding places mostly off the beaten track. Nevertheless, partly because of many muggles, not always the best to search for. RETURN Boschebenhütte https://www.boscheben.at/ Small hut with the usual good hut snack and great view Tulferhütte https://www.tulferhuette.at/ Great food with original hosts. I had bacon dumplings on sauerkraut (only 1 dumpling! But it was supposed to be a child's head) and my better half had spinach dumplings in pine butter. Both very very tasty. SIDESTORY Almost nothing would have happened. Our exhaust broke off when we drove off. Quick garage and then continue with "Brummi". Therefore shortened tour.

Quote from oncoming hikers: "Aa sporty with crutches there." At the Patscherkofel only got as far as the middle station because of a storm. Promotion as an additional deposit. The Zirbenweg at an altitude of approx. 2000 m is one of the most beautiful mountain hikes in Tyrol and impresses with a fascinating view of the Inn Valley and the Nordkette.

Today we walked the Zirbenweg near Innsbruck. We started at the Patscherkofel mountain station along a beautiful path full of alpine roses and, of course, Swiss pines towards the Tuflein Alm. Once we got there, we naturally had a small Swiss pine schnapps alongside a delicious apple strudel. A lovely, easy hike with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and Innsbruck.

Today, in sunshine, we took the bus up to the Patscherkofelbahn (the ticket was free with the 24h Innsbruckcard👍). The Zirbenweg is sensationally beautiful, with endless panoramas 🤗 The path is not so easy to walk as there are large stones in it. We had to go through a few snowfields and finally through streams of meltwater. It was great 😍 The Zirbensee is also worth it. We took the Glungezer Bahn back down to Tulfes. ☀️ TOP

KOMOOT TOUR 500. So something nice has to be there. The Zirbenweg is probably one of the most famous (but also most frequently walked) high-altitude trails in Tyrol. Today...on a Monday it went quite well. Only in the last section from Boscheben to Patscherkofelschutzhaus were there really a lot of people...That's why the locals call the trail "Griassdigottweg"😂 We did it today from the Glungezer side and enjoyed a completely different panorama than usual... Wonderful hike, even if...even at almost 2000 meters, very hot
