Hiking

The historic circular trail around Bad Homburg invites you to discover the spa town with its magnificent parks and stately buildings. There is also an excursion point into the time of the Romans. Thanks to the numerous water springs in the town, the city developed into a popular spa resort in the 18th and 19th centuries, and as early as 1912 it received the addition of "Bad" (Spa). The tour begins in the historic spa park of Bad Homburg, which is considered one of the most beautiful parks in Germany. The springs that made Bad Homburg so famous are also located here.

You leave the spa park in a northerly direction and follow the Sülzertalweg to the Waldfriedhof (forest cemetery), mastering the first ascent. Past the Waldfriedhof, the path leads you further up over the Rotlaufweg into a tranquil forest. Here, the Thomasweg leads you directly to the famous Saalburg Roman Fort. The Saalburg Roman Fort is the world's only one of its kind that has been rebuilt. Thanks to exhibitions, public guided tours, and numerous events, you can immerse yourself wonderfully in the world of the Romans here.

The next few kilometers continue with some ascents through the magnificent Taunus forest to the Herzberg, which is just under 591 meters high. Here you have the opportunity to stop for refreshments or, for a small fee, you can climb the observation tower to get a fabulous panoramic view of the Rhine-Main region.

The path leads you steeply downhill to the Marmorstein rock formation. From there, it goes down more gently and thus more knee-friendly back into the town of Bad Homburg. Before you wander back into the Kurgarten (spa garden), you can be enchanted by the quite tame deer in the Hirschgarten (deer park). Also enchanting are the Tannenwaldallee and the Schlossgarten (castle garden), which you cross on your way back to the starting point. Arriving back at the Kurpark, you can stroll along the town's shopping street, the Louisenstraße, and let yourself be fascinated once again by the flair of the spa town.

Saalburg Roman fort

Highlight • Historical Site

The Saalburg, a fort with a camp village on the border of the Roman Empire and the Germanic tribal areas in Roman times, was rebuilt around 1900 on the initiative of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The complex, which is unique in the world, is part of the UNESCO Limes World Heritage Site. The complete fortifications, buildings made of stone and wood and reconstructed baking ovens can be seen. Staged rooms, models and archaeological finds illustrate the living and working environment of the soldiers and the population in the village outside the gates. A tour of the Saalburg gives visitors a good insight into the history, culture and way of life of the Romans.

Marmorstein

Highlight • Natural Monument

Contrary to what the name suggests, the marble stone is not made of marble but of Taunus quartzite. This rock can be seen on many break edges and cliffs in the Taunus.

The first 13 km of the tour (a little more than half) are uphill in total (good cardio training). There are one or two plateaus, but overall the route only goes in one direction: uphill :-)
It goes like this until the Herzberg, where the keen hiker reaches the highest point of the tour. I took a 45-minute break there …

In the Taunusinfo booklet "Wandern Taunus" I dig through the suggested tours.

The "spa landscape of Bad Homburg" is truly a jewel if you want to get to know the highlights around Bad Homburg, including the spa gardens and deer garden.

The stop at Herzberg is exactly half of the tour and then it goes down again.
