The red loop is a shorter route with 16 kilometers and the trails over the moors invite you to enjoy a cross-country ride in dry conditions. In wet weather you sometimes fight against the mud, but not where you can make good use of the wooden walkway. In any case, the mountain bike adventure around Maasmechelen is a success, thanks to the clearly marked route.
The loop contains some climbing due to its location on the Kempisch plateau. Your hard work will certainly be rewarded with a magnificent view, all the way to Maastricht. In the spring and autumn you may encounter sheep along the way, grazing the slope. Because of the relief, machines cannot do that work here. The sheep also ensure that the heath remains open, as they also like to trim the trees and shrubs.
The Maasmechelen red loop connects to: Lanaken green and Maasmechelen blue. Starting points for this loop are: Camping Kikmolen and Gateway Mechelse Heide (also known as Salamander).

Comments
Short steep slopes and nice descents. The flat parts have a fair amount of flow.
You can also ride it in the other direction. So oncoming traffic is possible, which is a shame.
I think the route is the most …

This is not a route appropriate for beginners haha. The views are great and some hills are doable, but some hills are very steep with loose rocks and big roots. Not an easy route, but fun nonetheless.
