Road cycling

The "Sellaronda" is THE classic in the Dolomites and is a must for your road bike holiday in Alta Badia. You circle the impressive Sella massif and enjoy the contrasting mix of challenging climbs and breathtaking views. At the same time, you cycle in the footsteps of the Giro d'Italia cyclists who test their strength year after year on the legendary passes of the Sellaronda.

The tour is not particularly long, but it is still a challenge. After all, there are four challenging passes waiting to be mastered by you. It starts with the Passo Campolongo (1,875 meters). This is followed by the Pordoi Pass, the Sella Pass to the west and the Gardena Pass to the north. The Pordoi Pass is not only the highest point of this tour, but also the second highest pass road in the Dolomites. After just over 50 kilometers, you'll have climbed around 1,700 meters and you'll know what you've done. You'll be rewarded along the way: Breathtaking views await you time and again and you'll ride through many beautiful places that are ideal for a coffee or snack break.

Corvara

Highlight • Settlement

Around 52 kilometers and 1,700 meters in altitude are waiting for you if you want to ride the famous Sella Ronda through the Dolomites. This is particularly attractive during the Sella Ronda Bike Day. Every year the route around the Sella Group is closed to cars and motorbikes for seven hours, you can only ride your bike there - a great event. Corvara is a great starting point for the big round. When you get back, a fresh espresso is waiting for you here!

Campolongo Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Campolongo is the "smallest" of the Dolomite passes, and the elevation gain is relatively manageable at 368 meters (north ascent from Corvara). Nevertheless, it's a beautiful route: You gaze down upon lush mountain meadows on one side and up at the rugged rock faces of the Sella massif on the other. On the Sella Ronda, it's the "fourth in the group" and more of a small "pleasure pass" than a tough challenge.

Climb to Passo Pordoi from Arabba

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Even though it does not have impossible slopes and difficulties (average slope just over 6% on both sides), it is famous among cyclists both for the beauty of the area in which it is immersed and because it has been climbed since the 1940s by the Giro d 'Italy. It is also one of the passes included in the Sellaronda and in the Maratona delle Dolomiti, a long-distance cycling race.

Since 2006 it has also been the scene of the amateur time trial valid for the AmaTour (the Amateur Cycling World Cup): the Arabba - Passo Pordoi.

From Arabba you have to face 33 hairpin bends to reach the Pordoi pass.

Perhaps the most famous monument in Italy among those dedicated to cyclists, the Fausto Coppi stele on the Pordoi pass is a true icon of the Giro d'Italie and of world cycling. Placed in July 2000 by the municipality of Canazei, it features the following inscription: "In the shadow of the majestic Dolomite peaks, this bronze will bear witness over time to the unparalleled exploits of the greatest cyclist. To Fausto Coppi, the Champion". Between 1940 and 1954, the Giro d'Italia passed through Pordoi eight times: the first on the summit was Coppi five times.

Pordoi Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Pordoi pass, at an altitude of 2,239 metres, connects Trentino to Veneto. It is located between the Sella group and the Marmolada group. The Pordoi pass has been tackled more than 40 times by the Giro d'Italia: its hairpin bends were the scene of the first great victories of Bartali and Coppi.

Passo Sella – Rifugio Maria Flora

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Once or twice a year there is also the Sellarondabikeday. You can “enjoy” the whole thing without car traffic. This means that even more people are traveling by bike.

Gardena Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

From the Gardena Pass, you have an unforgettable panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and mountain ranges of the Dolomites. To the south rises the Sella massif, to the north the Cir peaks tower steeply. To the west you can see the famous Sassolungo, and to the east the view extends to the peaks of the Val Badia. Besides numerous cable cars that ascend to the surrounding mountains, you will also find various accommodations at the Gardena Pass.

This time we allowed ourselves the luxury of arriving the evening before and spending a night in the hotel. So I went to the slopes with two of my sons without any hassle. The conditions today were perfect: slightly cloudy and therefore pleasant to drive. However, the conclusion that there might be less going on because of this has not been confirmed. There was always the typical traffic jam at the top. But then it dispersed nicely downhill. A great day today. First. But now we are stuck in Brixen after a car breakdown. I'm starting to get sick of pizza🤣

This is the short route of the Maratona that everyone will be doing on Sunday for the Maratona does Dolomites. You can either finish in Corvara or continue on over the Campolongo for a second time and then on to the Giau and Falzarego (full Maratona - 138 km, 4,230m) or only the Falzarego for the Medio (106 km, 3,130m). ⛰️ Campolongo Pass (1,875 m - 5.8km, 6.1%) ⛰️ Passo Pordoi (2,239 m - 9.2 km, 6.9%) ⛰️ Sella Pass (2,240 m - 5.5 km, 7.9%) ⛰️ Sela de Culac (2,018 m) ⛰️ Gardena Pass (2,121 m - 5.8 km, 4.3%)

Sella Ronda Bikeday, a great event in the Dolomites, completely closed, only free for cyclists. A fantastic day in a fantastic setting💪🎉Cyclists from all countries unite😍👏☀️😎

I think every 7 years (Heinz, what does the chronicle say?) I need this - like going to the cinema with sweating.

Every year I have been cycling in the Dolomites for over 20 years now and it is always an experience. As always, I cycled clockwise. The roads are not in good condition!!! Watch out!!! Don't be surprised that the altitude is incorrect, it is 1700 meters above sea level........

The height profile is of course nonsense at the Pordoi. Put the Garmin on pause, probably wasn't such a good idea!

It was a wonderful up and down ride through the Dolomites, one of the most beautiful high mountains ever...🏔⛰️ I would also like to mention my fellow cyclists @JanaG., Authari, Achim, Kettentöter, Jürgen and Volker 😉👍 with whom it was a lot of fun.
