Hiking

The Fischhaus restaurant in the Radeberger Vorstadt is the starting point of this beautiful hike in the Dresdner Heide. It goes straight into the forest and you hike in a large arc to the sister spring above the Weißer Hirsch district.

Here and in the neighboring Degelequelle you can imitate the residents of the Weißer Hirsch, who get fresh water in the morning with bottles and thermos flasks and refill your drinking bottle. According to the district forester, the water is of drinking water quality and is examined annually.

At the edge of the Dresdner Heide you now hike on to the Napoleonschanze. It is located on one of the cliffs that have formed here and offers you a very good view over the Mordgrundbrücke quarry into the Elbe valley. Just a stone's throw away you will meet Chiron, the centaur from ancient mythology.

The great affinity of the Saxon princes and their builders during the Renaissance and Baroque periods brought the ancient models to a new flowering. Castles, parks and facades were richly decorated with the now fashionable mythical creatures and finally, in 1902, the philanthropic centaur Chiron was erected here, in the immediate vicinity of the Kurpark Weißer Hirsch and the Lahmann sanatorium, in order to represent a connection to nature and healing.

Then it goes back into the forest to the wolf hill with the ruins of a former lookout tower. Today only the base of the 25 meter high observation tower with two exposed staircases, built in 1911, remains here. At that time it was made of reinforced concrete, comparable to today's reinforced concrete. It is hard to imagine that the materials were transported by horse to the construction site in the middle of the forest on a specially designed, 450 meter long field railway.

You will soon reach the starting point again and if you like, you can take the opportunity to visit the historic fish house. There you can linger on the beautiful hike and let yourself be pampered by the innkeepers.

Napoleonschanze at Stechgrund

Highlight • Viewpoint

With good visibility you can see as far as Bannewitz and beyond. Small break area (on the Gelber Punkt Weg) to linger.

In contrast to his wild and combative companions, this Centaur has a philanthropic disposition. The approximately two and a half meter high figure made of Schöna sandstone shows a mischievous smile, while his horse's body lies on the sandstone surface and the human body is erect and arms crossed. This figure emanates calm and peacefulness.

Wolfshügelturm Ruins

Highlight • Monument

Even if, unfortunately, only the base of the ruins of the once architecturally extraordinary Wolf Hill Tower with spiral staircase and open column and arch structures from 1912 is left, you can also enjoy an unbelievable distant view of the Elbe Valley and the striking silhouette of the city of Dresden from the ground.

Historic Fischhaus Dresden

Highlight • Restaurant

The historic Fischhaus is one of the oldest inns in Dresden. As early as 1476, the Dresden Augustinian monks were given permission to divert the clear water for their monastery and to create fish breeding ponds. The pond keeper's house has been called the Fischhaus ever since. A license to serve alcohol was granted in 1650, when the district forester already resided here.

The Fischhaus established itself as a place to stop off and with its beautiful ambience is still worth a visit today.

A nice walk with good fresh air and a bit of sunshine. The path is easy and doable for everyone.

The Dresden Heath is a beautiful place to unwind and enjoy nature. Water flows everywhere. There's plenty to see and hear. We even found a geocache. 🙃

On the so-called Wolfshügel (Wolf's Hill), there's an old tower that's due for renovation.

A beautiful walk through this part of the Dresden Heath, especially at this time of year. I think it's great that the tower is being rebuilt, and also that the lower section has been restored so that you can already enjoy a small view.
