Mach 3 is the longest of the three cross-country style adventure routes out of Machynlleth, and also features the technical descent known as ‘The Chute’. If you’re heading out on this ride, make sure you take plenty of snacks with you as you certainly won’t find anywhere else to refuel along the way in these remote hills of the Northern Cambrian Mountains!

Mach 3 follows the same route as Mach 2 for the first 6 miles (10 km), featuring a road pedal out of Machynlleth through the golf course, climbing through the lanes and the gravel bridleway climb through the fields. The steep slate chute at the end here will prepare you a little for what’s to come.

Next, you’ll continue south, deeper into the mountains, following the wide slate gravel tracks through the forest. These lead you up the valley side towards Mynydd Bychan, popping out onto the moorland tracks at the loop’s most southerly and highest point.

The good news is that it’s almost all downhill as you head back north to Machynlleth, rumbling back over the open hilltops to start. The Chute comes up next and will be a test of any rider’s skill, especially in the wet when it can be slippery. Do take a moment to take in the views here though, as they are second to none.

As if that wasn’t good enough, the fantastic balcony gravel road is up next, shared by all the Mach MTB loops, leading you back to the north towards Machynlleth. Head west next for a stint on the Trans Cambrian Way, finishing with the Llyfnant forested singletrack descent before the lane and cycleway complete your loop back into town.

Machynlleth Clock Tower

Highlight • Settlement

Machynlleth is a small town that's guaranteed to have more sheep than inhabitants. It's quite peaceful here, but the village still has a lot to offer. In the centre, beautiful buildings, cosy restaurants and interesting, alternative shops are waiting for you.

The area is inspiring. Just outside the town is the small summer house where Robert Plant and Jimmy Page are said to have written some songs for their band Led Zeppelin.

There are plenty of hotels and a campsite nearby.

Machynlleth Golf Course Road

Highlight • Viewpoint

This main road out of Machynlleth heading south into the hills takes you past the golf course on your way to Forge, and is a gorgeous strip of tarmac, albeit a bit of a climb!

If you're heading into the town from the south, it's a reassuring sight as you near civilisation again after the remote 'Desert of Wales'.

Through the gate and down you go: this is a really narrow, steep and slate-paved singletrack heading straight down the hillside with views of the opposite valley side ahead.

The track features on the Mach 2 and Mach 3 MTB XC trails (you'll see the waymarkers on the gate), but also on the gravel-bike orientated Grinduro! Wales 2021 route.

The Chute

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

This is normally ridden down as part of the Mach 3 route. Be careful as slippery in the wet. Further down is very narrow with a deep ravine running alongside. You don’t want to fall in!
Is mostly a ‘hike a bike’ going up it.

Valley Balcony Gravel Track (Mach 1 Loop)

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The most spectacular balcony road along the valley side with gorgeous views and often circle around you. There's a mix of grassy climb, wide gravel doubletrack and a few gates through a woodland, but all brilliant fun and dusty in the dry!

The track is part of the Mach 1 mountain biking loop, but is also great on a gravel bike or sturdy tourer.

Llyfnant Forest Descent

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

From east to west, this is a marvellous rocky, loose descent through the forest alongside the Llynfnant, that features both on the Mach 1 XC loop and the multi-day Trans Cambrian Way.

With dappled light through the trees in strong sunlight and some small roots and ruts to navigate, it's an absolute blast on gravel bikes and mountain bikes alike, and goes on much longer than you'd expect!
