Mach 2 MTB loop – slate tracks of the Dyfi Valley

02:13

Mountain biking

A little rougher and more technical than the Mach 1 loop, Mach 2 packs in some more climbs to the south of Machynlleth with a real range of terrain from grassy farmland bridleways to gravel roads and singletrack.

The start of the Mach 2 loop mirrors the other loops, out through the golf course to Forge and climbing gently on the lanes. Then you turn left to join a bridleway around the peak of Commins Pant-glâs, which is a gravel doubletrack up through the grassy fields.

After you’ve regained your breath at the top of the climb, a steep slate chute is up next, down through the woods and into the valley. Rejoin gravel tracks as you zig-zag up through the woods, then up into the open before a steeper stretch.

The effort is well worth it though, as it leads to the most sublime gravel balcony road in the Llyfnant Valley. Enjoy the views as you sail along the wide track.

Mach 2 concludes with a descent over the moorland on wide gravel tracks and some singletrack down to a lane which leads to the main road to Mach. You can pick up the cycle lane to avoid the traffic on the main road as you pedal back into the town.

Machynlleth Clock Tower

Highlight • Settlement

Machynlleth is a small town that's guaranteed to have more sheep than inhabitants. It's quite peaceful here, but the village still has a lot to offer. In the centre, beautiful buildings, cosy restaurants and interesting, alternative shops are waiting for you.

The area is inspiring. Just outside the town is the small summer house where Robert Plant and Jimmy Page are said to have written some songs for their band Led Zeppelin.

There are plenty of hotels and a campsite nearby.

Machynlleth Golf Course Road

Highlight • Viewpoint

This main road out of Machynlleth heading south into the hills takes you past the golf course on your way to Forge, and is a gorgeous strip of tarmac, albeit a bit of a climb!

If you're heading into the town from the south, it's a reassuring sight as you near civilisation again after the remote 'Desert of Wales'.

Commins Pant-glâs Gravel Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This smooth some bridleway gently climbs around the peak of Commins Pant-glâs. It is on the Mach 2 and 3 MTB loops, and has been featured on the Grinduro! Wales course.

Through the gate and down you go: this is a really narrow, steep and slate-paved singletrack heading straight down the hillside with views of the opposite valley side ahead.

The track features on the Mach 2 and Mach 3 MTB XC trails (you'll see the waymarkers on the gate), but also on the gravel-bike orientated Grinduro! Wales 2021 route.

Grinduro! Wales Gravel Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Turn off the road, over the cattle grid and onto prime gravel roads, up and around the corners into the hill south of Machynlleth.

This gravel track leads to the most incredible balcony road in the valley. It features in several of the Mach MTB XC trails and was also used for the Grinduro! Wales 2021 course and hangover ride.

Gravel or mountain bike, this trail is ace.

Valley Balcony Gravel Track (Mach 1 Loop)

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The most spectacular balcony road along the valley side with gorgeous views and often circle around you. There's a mix of grassy climb, wide gravel doubletrack and a few gates through a woodland, but all brilliant fun and dusty in the dry!

The track is part of the Mach 1 mountain biking loop, but is also great on a gravel bike or sturdy tourer.
