Former Waterfall at Germanenbrücke

Highlight • Waterfall

At first glance, this little river does not give the impression that this was once a waterfall. The Germanic bridge is a beautiful overpass. From here you have the most beautiful view.

Whirlpools of the Kleine Kyll

Highlight • Natural Monument

A beautiful and very exciting way. It's definitely worth not taking the signposted shortcut back to the Heidsmühle, but rather climbing up the Wolfsschlucht - it's sure to be a lot of fun for little mountaineers too.

Basalt Columns in Wolfsschlucht

Highlight • Natural Monument

Perhaps the most beautiful section on the way from Manderscheid to the Windsborn crater lake. The Horngrabenbach eats its way into the terrain as it becomes steeper and steeper. Shortly before meeting the Kleine Kyll, the brook worked its way deep into the lava and an approximately 100 meter long path leads through the gorge. Stones and trees are covered with moss. Moisture is in the air and gives a wildly romantic impression that the photos stored here cannot even come close to reproducing.

You should take a little time for the volcano adventure park. There is a pavilion here with some information boards. But also a collection of different volcanic rocks that you can touch. The whole thing is located on the site of a former lava mining area. Very interesting!

Mosenberg Lookout Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Moseberg is one of the most beautiful and striking volcanic mountains in the Eifel. At the top of the tower you have a beautiful view to the north to the Meerfelder Maar and to the east to Manderscheid, where the Maarmuseum is located. Immediately to the north is the water-filled Windsborn Crater.

Windsborn Crater summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

One of the few volcanic crater lakes north of the Alps: the Windsborn crater lake, formed around 30,000 years ago. While maars are blasted into the earth as craters when lava hits water-bearing layers, the Windsborn is a stratovolcano that has built itself up as a mountain on top of the basement. Layers of lava alternate with slag and ash thrown out of the volcano. Such an outbreak usually lasts from days to a few weeks. Today you can look down from the summit cross to the lake, which is only around two meters shallow. The water used to be drained to extract peat. It's over. Today the lake is filled up by rainwater. The summit cross is ideal for a picnic. In this audio contribution, Prof. Achim Brauer from the Georesearch Center Potsdam explains how the crater lake was formed: soundcloud.com/zeitwissen/wie-entstand-der-windsborn.

Meerfelder Maar

Highlight (Segment) • Lake

The Maarsee in the Meerfelder Maar is not circular but a semicircle, because the southern part of the Maars is not filled with water. Here lies the small village Meerfeld within the Maars. Especially towards the north, the maar is bounded by a steep slope more than 150 meters high. The trail directly on the northern shore below the slope is very beautiful and should be committed.

Big Bang Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

The Cosmos Cycle Path is a cycle path that opens up part of the Vulkaneifel on an almost slope-free route.

It connects the Eifel city of Daun with Meerfeld and the largest Eifelmaar, the Meerfelder Maar. In addition to the natural landscape of the region, it offers an insight into our solar system and the cosmos. He tries to convey a sense of the gigantic distances and periods of the surrounding universe. The path is divided into two areas. Between the Kurpark Daun and the Bleckhausener mill are models of the individual planets, scaled in size and distance to the sun. Here a covered meter corresponds to 500,000 km in reality. In the second section between the bridge at the Bleckhausener mill, which leads over the Kleine Kyll, and the Meerfelder Maar, the distance traveled does not correspond to distances, but time periods. Every meter equals three million years. The time from the Big Bang to today is demonstrated.

The family-friendly route is uniformly marked in both directions with the bike path logo. (Wiki)

🤔 My watch sometimes records very strange altitude meters, of course it wasn't over 4000 😂

I've done it a few times, but I don't think I've ever done it in summer. It doesn't matter, you can always go 🥾🥾

Surprise egg hike - excitement, games and chocolate.... Path down to the stream (pure enjoyment), back up the Wolfsschlucht (fantastically beautiful), along meadows to the quarry (very interesting), uphill to the Mosenberg (unfortunately no view, renovation work), down to the crater lake (enjoy peace and quiet), through the town to the maar (snack spot with a view), path down and back to the starting point. Coffee and cake as a reward.

A weekend in the Volcanic Eifel (Manderscheid)...

Translated by Google

Today a tour that I partially copied from Great Britten on track. It runs over long stretches along the Vulkanweg or the VulkaMaar path. We started in Manderscheid and we went through the village past the Maarmuseum over narrow paths into the valley. We wanted to cross the Kleine Kyll, but unfortunately the Germanenbrücke was washed away. The water was quite fast along the way, so we didn't even dare to cross over stones. We therefore had to turn back and look for another passage further upstream. From there it went steadily uphill to the volcanic garden and even higher to the Mosenberg. Very nice hut on the summit where we stopped for a rest. You could see Manderscheid in the distance, but we wanted to go further to the Windborner Krater See. Very idyllic! Further through Bettenfeld, where we bought cool drinks from a small shop. Down into the valley to the Meerfelder Maar. Around it once. There was a small path near the shore. At the end, however, you have to keep to the left because a gate blocked our way. Along the Meerbach upwards towards Manderscheid. We had to go part of the way along the road, then back on forest paths to the starting point. Exhausting but very beautiful. Oh and we had full rain protection with us, but not a drop came :).
