For those short on time, this comment is too long. I was a little disappointed with this tour offered online. Therefore, I have enriched it a bit to suit my taste. If you're short on time, you can skip Rottenburg and Hohenentringen; if you're even shorter, you can condense this tour into a Tübingen city tour (Literature Trail). It's astonishing which great minds lived in Tübingen and, in some cases, died there (see pictures of the city cemetery). This is largely due to the Eberhard Karls University (founded in 1477). And to the efforts of the Württemberg ruling house after the Reformation to systematically train Protestant pastors, through 12 boarding schools and the Protestant Foundation. Not only theologians but also poets and thinkers emerged from this city. I'd like to let a few of the poets have their say: Hölderlin, Friedrich (1770-1843) From 1788 to 1793 he studied theology as a scholarship holder at the Evangelical Foundation. His Tübingen Hymns are famous. Good Carl! – in those beautiful days I once sat with you on the Nekkar beach. Joyfully we watched the waves crash against the shore, Little streams led us through the sand. At last I looked up. In the evening shimmer The river stood. A holy feeling trembled through my heart; and suddenly I was no longer joking, Suddenly I arose from my boyhood play. Uhland, Ludwig (1787-1862) Stift 1801-1805 Philosophical studies as a scholarship holder of the Evangelical Stift By setting this poem to music, Silcher created a monument for himself and the Wurmlinger Chapel: Up above stands the chapel, Looking quietly down into the valley, Down below, by the meadow and spring, Joyfully and brightly, the shepherd boy sings. The bell tolls sadly down, The funeral choir is eerie; The joyful songs are silent, And the boy listens up above. Up above they are brought to their graves, Those who rejoiced in the valley; Shepherd boy! Shepherd boy! There will be singing for you too there someday. Mörike, Eduard (1804-1875) 1822-1826 Scholar of the Evangelical Foundation From "At Midnight" Night calmly rose to land, Leaning dreamily against the mountain wall, Her eyes now see the golden scales Time rests quietly in equal scales; And bolder the springs rush forth, They sing in the ear of the mother, the night, Of the day, Of today's day. Hesse, Hermann (1877-1962) 1895-1898 Bookseller at Heckenhauer in Tübingen Stages As every blossom withers and every youth Gives way to old age, so every stage of life blooms, Every wisdom and every virtue blooms In its time and may not last forever. At every call of life, the heart must be ready for farewells and new beginnings, to bravely and without sadness to give itself to other, new bonds. And there is a magic within every beginning, that protects us and helps us to live. We should walk cheerfully through space after space, not clinging to any one as to a home. The spirit of the world does not want to bind us or restrict us, It wants to raise and expand us step by step. Scarcely are we at home in a circle of life and have settled in comfortably, when we are threatened with slackening; Only those who are ready to set off and travel can escape paralyzing habit. Perhaps the hour of death will also send us young into new spaces, life's call to us will never end. Well then, heart, say goodbye and get well! What is a poet without a publisher and a publisher without a bookstore? Exactly. Cotta Publishing House (since 1659) Under Johann Friedrich Cotta, the publishing house developed into the most important literary publisher of the time. Schiller, Wolfgang von Goethe, Herder, Fichte, Hölderlin, Kleist, Hegel, Schelling, and Alexander von Humboldt published with this publishing house. The publishing house gave rise to the Osiander Bookstore (since 1596) In recent years, this bookstore has expanded significantly in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Bavaria, with over 60 locations and 600 employees, and is one of the ten largest German-language bookstores. The parent company is Tübingen. Why should a monastery be included in a literary tour? The monks not only prayed and worked, but were also skilled in writing. Many places celebrate their anniversary because their community is first mentioned in a monastic document (what we would call a land register today). Bebenhausen has a writing tower.
