A drive through the Black Forest rarely leads past the famous Black Forest High Road. In 1930, at the time of the emerging auto tourism ’, the aim was in particular to create better connections between the already existing high-altitude hotels. It is therefore also one of the oldest holiday routes in Germany. And while we're on superlatives: the views are also record-breaking.
Depending on your fitness level, it is worthwhile if you plan a good day for the tour - so you can approach the route completely relaxed and let your gaze wander into the distance for as long as you want.
You start your ride over the ridge in Freudenstadt on the market square. The local train station is just a few hundred meters north of it. To make the upcoming ascent worthwhile, it first goes downhill from Freudenstadt through the Forbachtal. In Baiersbronn you turn into the Murgtal and follow the water on gently rising paths upstream.
Shortly after Obertal, the ascent of the day awaits you: a little more than 300 meters in altitude, it goes up to the Alexanderschanze. As soon as the route flattens out a little, you turn onto the B500 for a short while - welcome to the Black Forest High Road! Of course, you don't stay on the main road for long, but after just a few hundred meters turn back onto the Black Forest cycle path, which runs relatively parallel to the road.
However, a short detour is also worth considering: If you want, you can turn off the B500 for two kilometers in the direction of Zuflucht / Oppenau. From the paraglider slope, which is located in the first serpentine of the main road, you have one of the most impressive views in the Black Forest. You may not get out of your amazement at all, but with a little luck you will continue on your way on your knee. Warning: the next great view is not long in coming.
After visiting the local monastery ruins on Kniebis, the same valley that took you out of the city at the beginning will bring you back to Freudenstadt: the Forbachtal. When you arrive at the market square, you can stop off at the local brewery inn - a fitting end to today's bike tour.

Great tour!! 😉 In beautiful landscape/nature, first leisurely along the Forbach and the Murg. Through the Mitteltal/Obertal, up to the Black Forest High Road to the Black Forest heights of Zuflucht and Kniebis and back on mega great paths. Definitely not the last time I'll ride 👍
Very nice tour, but the tour now and then leads through private property. That is not OK.
Start in Freudenstadt with warm, humid weather and lots of sunshine ☀️ We cycled along the Forbach to Baiersbronn on the Murg, before taking a break at the Untere Sophia pit. Continue in the Murgtal to Mitteltal and Obertal. We continued along the Buhlbach with a gradually increasing incline for about 8km up to the Alexanderschanze. Past the nature reserve to Kniebis, there another long break at a beautiful rest area. We first cycled downhill on the Black Forest cycle path and then back along the Forbach back to Freudenstadt. Extremely beautiful scenic tour on consistently very good cycle paths.
I had actually already planned an escape from the fog for last week. Everything was well prepared, battery full, picnic ready, tour planned - and then - fog also on the mountains on Saturday. So it's all back to normal. Today then. Weather is fine. We had already been prepared since last week - so off we go. Hmm.... Battery now only 60% - never mind, no time to charge - must have happened on the way - although no idea where. Tour was great, weather too, found power on the way - so everything was perfect. So just take advantage of the opportunity, we won't have as much of it this year.
It was nice. But now I'm done - and that's an understatement!
Komoot had a dropout in the forest between Obertal and Kniebis. There should be another 3-4 km. The altitude meters are right.
