Cycling

This route does not make a loop. It starts in Retz on the town square, runs across the western Weinviertel and ends at the Danube bridge in Tulln, directly on the Danube Cycle Path. So at the end, you won't get off where you started, but at one of Europe's major cycling axes. The route passes the train stations of Retz, Ziersdorf, Großweikersdorf and Tulln. So you can shorten it wherever you want, and you can easily get away from any of these points. It is signposted in both directions; so the ride can also be started from Tulln to Retz – then you will have the gradient against you, but the wine villages await you as a reward at the end of the day.

Hardly out of Retz, the first eye-catcher appears: a windmill on the hills in front of the town. Afterwards, it heads southwest into the wine villages of Obermarkersdorf, Waitzendorf and Pulkau, a stretch through the Retzer Hügelland nature reserve, then on to Röschitz. Near Roseldorf, there is a rest stop at a wetland biotope with a stone table where a whole group can find a place. Shortly thereafter, the Great Bustard observation tower stands on a meadow.

Afterwards, the route turns south, via Sitzendorf an der Schmida and Ziersdorf to Großweikersdorf. Here you reach the axis of the Schmida valley. The terrain changes noticeably along the way. In the north, there are still hills and hollow paths, then it becomes more and more open, wider and wider, until the landscape south of Großweikersdorf merges into the plain. This is also where the Schmida river enters the Tullner Becken. The last section leads via Hippersdorf and Stetteldorf through the Wagram region to Tulln.

View of Retz Windmill

Highlight • Monument

I was quite amazed. There actually stands a windmill on the hills in front of Retz. The story behind it: The windmill was built in the 18th century and used for grinding grain. After an extensive restoration, it is fully functional again. A great place for a break in any case!

Roseldorf Rest Area and Biotope

Highlight • Natural Monument

Nice stop with a huge stone table. Wetland biotope, a small bridge and a nice opportunity for a detour through almost invisible path along the small stream.

This wooden observation tower offers some interesting information boards about the endangered Great Bustard. With a bit of luck, you might also spot one of the rare birds from here (take binoculars!). Everyone else can enjoy the view, or as I did, eat their snack here in the shade on the bench.

Cycle Path in Schmidatal

Highlight • Cycleway

The Schmida has given the entire valley its name. It's not large. That's exactly what makes this section so pleasant. A flat path, a stream next to it, and a landscape that opens up more and more to the south until the valley merges into the plain at the Wagram.
