Hiking
The starting point for this diverse circular hike is the pass village of Splügen. Since Splügen is located on the A13 motorway, getting there by car or bus is easy. You'll leave the traditional Walser houses behind you and cross the Hinterrhein. You'll soon gain the first few meters of elevation and climb through the Fugschtwald forest to the Franzisch Grind, a viewpoint at the tree line.
After a good four kilometers, you'll reach a small stream, where you'll turn left. A narrow path leads you through an alpine landscape to the two Suretta Lakes, which glitter a deep blue in the sun. On the shore of the Ober Suretta Lake, you'll find an unmanned hut where you can take a rest against its warming exterior wall. Or you can take a rowboat ride on the lake.
Then you'll leave the high plateau amidst the rocky mountains and hike back to the crossroads. You cross the Splügen Pass road at Bodmastafel and then follow the famous Via Spluga. The route continues through beautiful forests along the Hüscherabach stream back to Splügen – a stop for refreshments or an overnight stay in this picturesque village is the perfect end to this hike.
