Gravel riding

This shorter Tour is a great loop from Topsham, a gorgeous town on the Exe Estuary that you can reach from Exeter down the canal towpath via a seasonal ferry, along the Exe Estuary Trail or on the train. Heading up the hillside from the Exe to Woodbury Common, enjoy vast views over to the west of the Exe and as far as Dartmoor on a clear day from this expansive heathland.

Take the Exe Estuary Trail from Topsham to Exton to start, past the brilliant RSPB Goosemoor nature reserve. Bring your binos if you fancy seeing the ducks and waders up close! Take the brilliant bridleway from the village up to Woodbury and continue to climb on Castle Lane all the way up to the last bridleway push to the moat remains of Woodbury Castle.

You’ll soon see why Woodbury Common is so brilliant on a gravel bike here, on the wide, fast flowing gravel roads with impressive views of the Jurassic Coastline and blue sea beyond. Skirt the edge of the common on the narrow holly-lined bridleway to the east, with some more technical, rooty sections to challenge you.

Climb more rocky tracks to Blackhill Quarry, where decommissioned quarry pools are now home to seabirds and other species like tufted ducks. Head back down the hill to the estuary on country lanes to Lympstone, where you can pick up the estuary trail again back to Topsham.

Route 2 Bike Shop & Café

Highlight • Rest Area

A brilliant little stop off, named after the National Cycle Network Route 2. There's a bike shop with hire bikes as well as a little, but brilliant, café here.

Topsham is a beautiful place to visit on a bike, and is really well connected with both lanes and the mostly traffic-free Exe Estuary cycle path nearby. Why not hire a bike here for a pleasant ride down to the seaside at Exmouth and back?

It is a wetland habitat that attracts thousands of birds, especially waders and wildfowl, and offers stunning views of the Exe Estuary.
Exe Estuary Trail passes by the reserve and offers scenic views of the river and the surrounding countryside.

Exe Estuary Trail

Highlight • Trail

Lovely bit of traffic-free path between Topsham and Exton on the way to Exmouth seafront.

Well surfaced and ideal for any type of bike as well as walkers and runners. Be mindful of other users, especially when it's busier at the weekends and holidays.

Exton Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Brilliant linking way from the Exe Estuary path at Exton up towards the village of Woodbury. It's a single lane-width track that's rough in places, so better suited to gravel, cross and MTB rather than road bikes. There's also a few little splashes to navigate, although there are bridge alternatives. Look out for the dairy cows as you go!

Bridleway to Woodbury Castle

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A great alternative to the steeper top of Castle Lane, along a rutted and often wet wide bridleway before a sharper climb up to the car park opposite Woodbury Castle.

From the top, make sure you look out over the estuary for some incredible views (weather permitting)!

East Devon Way

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

You'll notice the purple signs and foxglove symbols of the East Devon Way along these wide pebblebed trails on Woodbury Common, from the Woodbury Castle hill fort running parallel alongside the road towards the golf course.

Look out for Marines hiding in the bushes or marching in the distance, as they use this area for training exercises.

Hawkerland Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A short downhill fast section through tight woodland. Loads of corners and little jumps to get you going.

Blackhill Quarry Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Ride through the centre of the old quarry here, with the lakes to either side and views to the coast. Look out on the water for birds, including Canada geese and tufted ducks.

Take it easy as there are gates at each end and it's a popular route for walkers.
