Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park - Walpa Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Uluṟu–Kata Tjuṯa National Park protects one of Australia’s most culturally and geologically significant landscapes, jointly managed with the Aṉangu Traditional Owners. Around Walpa Gorge, the park shifts from open desert into a dramatic corridor between the giant domes of Kata Tjuṯa, where rare plants, creek beds, and cooler microclimates survive beneath the towering conglomerate walls. Entry to the national park requires a paid park pass, currently around AUD $38 for adults for three consecutive days, with fees helping support park management and Aṉangu communities.

Walpa Gorge Walk

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

The Walpa Gorge Walk follows a rocky creek bed into the heart of Kata Tjuṯa, surrounded by towering red conglomerate domes that rise steeply on either side of the gorge. The track is mostly level but uneven underfoot, with loose stones and sections of rocky ground as it winds deeper into the sheltered gorge system. Along the way, you’ll pass rare desert plants, cycads, and pockets of greenery that survive here thanks to the cooler, protected conditions beneath the cliffs.

Kata Tjuṯa dune viewing area

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Kata Tjuṯa Dune Viewing Area opens up sweeping views across the domes, desert plains, and distant outline of Uluṟu on the horizon. From the raised lookout, you can fully appreciate the scale of Kata Tjuṯa and the rolling valleys between the formations, especially when changing desert light creates deep shadows and shifting colours across the rock. Sunrise and sunset are the most dramatic times to visit, though sunset is usually much quieter.

A short walk, 1 hour, into the Olgas... great.
Drinking is extremely important, dehydration happens quickly. Two different ages from our group were affected.
