Hiking

Enter a dimension where rock and ice dominate the landscape. This adventure begins in Saint-Jacques, then you walk towards the locality of Blanchard and Armaz. After crossing the bridge over the Verra stream, take path no. 7, passing the village of Fiéry and heading towards Pian di Verra Inferiore.

This vast alpine plain reveals itself suddenly, framed by the walls of the Monte Rosa massif. From here, the route follows a wide gravel dirt path that climbs towards the spectacular Lago Blu, famous for its incredible turquoise hues born from glacial meltwater.

Go past the body of water and the environment changes: the wide track disappears to make way for a single track, narrow and decidedly rockier. You cross the stream and climb the strenuous rocks of the glacial moraine up to a marked crossroads; turning left, you face the final climb that leads to the 3,036 meters of the Rifugio Mezzalama. Arriving up here offers a unique high-altitude viewpoint, with the possibility of staying overnight in the structure.

Rifugio Ottorino Mezzalama

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The most frequented refuge in the Ayas Valley, just over 3000 meters above sea level, overlooking the glaciers of the Monte Rosa massif. Many people climb up here, especially in the summer period. The last stretch of the climb is very steep, to be tackled calmly.
