Hiking
The Gosau Lakes are among the most impressive natural gems in the entire Alpine region and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut. Nestled between the rugged rock faces of the Gosaukamm ridge, they offer a spectacular panorama – most notably the view of the majestic Hoher Dachstein (2,995 m), which towers imposingly at the end of the valley. This unique natural landscape has inspired numerous painters and photographers over the centuries, which is why the Vorderer Gosausee is also known as the "Viewpoint of the Dachstein."
The hike begins at the parking lot at the Vorderer Gosausee (933 m) and follows a well-maintained, wide gravel path – ideal for experienced families with children. You follow the northern shore of the lake, which is famous for its particularly picturesque views. Along the way, there are numerous photo opportunities with reflections of the Dachstein in the clear water.
After about 45 minutes, you'll reach the Gosaulacke, a seasonally fluctuating intermediate reservoir that's heavily dependent on snowmelt and precipitation. A little further on, you'll reach the Hinterer Gosausee (1,164 m), idyllically situated in a basin and fed by underground karst springs and meltwater from the Dachstein massif. It's less visited, but particularly quiet and unspoiled.
The rustic Holzmeisteralm mountain hut is a great place for a stop.
The return journey follows the same route – accompanied by new perspectives and lighting.
