Hiking

On this inspiring tour, you'll discover modern artworks around the idyllic Längsee lake. Stift St. Georgen, a former Benedictine convent, is your starting point. Today it is used as a school, educational center, and hotel. Shortly after starting, you'll encounter the first sculpture of the art trail and follow the route counter-clockwise around the lake. You'll hike through the green lakeside landscape, small villages, and with a dreamlike view of the water.

A total of eight sculptures will accompany you along the way. The project was realized by the sculptor Andres Klimbacher. For this, he divided a prose text written especially for the region into eight sections, and each sculpture picks up on a part of it. At the stations, you'll find the respective text on metal plates, so you can read the entire story piece by piece during your walk.

Beautiful views of the Längsee open up again and again as you pass places like the Georgium or the lidos. In the end, the loop closes again at thestift.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkdD3OkTLK4 Lake Längsee is a glacially formed natural lake located in the St. Veit an der Glan district in the state of Carinthia. It has quite shallow shores in places and reaches temperatures of up to 27°C in summer; its deepest point is 21 m deep. Almost everything is permitted: swimming, fishing, sailing, SUPing, diving... In 1990, a 29 kg pike was caught in the lake, measuring 146 cm. Bream also grow very large, reaching lengths of over 50 cm. Unfortunately, the circumnavigation cannot be done along the shore due to too much private property. The spacious path around the lake is enhanced by works of art by Andreas Klimbacher, these sculptures providing a bit of variety. Along the way, you pass St. Georgen Abbey; there's even a separate abbey swimming pool, which was unfortunately closed. Luckily, I got free entry to the nearby lido. After the circumnavigation, I went canoeing around the lake and took a look at the underwater world. The lake is very beautiful, but the route wasn't that great. Best, Harald 😎

A day later another night tour in the dark 🕯️. Shortly after a detour to the church to pick up a halo 😇, and then straight back on the tour route with the Carinthian Madel Sandy as a tour guide 👊👍🙃

Yesterday I was able to experience what a fantastic summer bathing paradise the Längsee is. But first it's time to go HIKING. The circuit around the Längsee is more of a leisurely stroll, about eight kilometers long, and fairly flat. I walked clockwise past the beautiful monastery building, numerous benches and a really great viewing platform, the "Karawankenblick." The closer I got to the starting point, the more children's laughter I could hear. In this wonderful summer holiday weather, everyone who could took the time to sunbathe. The fairly new boathouse with its floating terrace above the lake and the Seegasthaus Längsee are great places to stop for a break.
