This audio tour takes you once around the Holzen Monastery. You will encounter baroque architecture, learn more about the former everyday life in the monastery and discover the beautiful landscape of the Schmuttertal valley.

The tour starts at the entrance of the monastery. From here, the path leads first through the historic monastery area - through the inner courtyard, into the lavishly decorated baroque church, past the Lourdes Grotto and through the beautifully landscaped Kreuzgarten. On gentle forest paths and across the open corridor, you will soon be drawn to Allmannshofen. Passing the Moritzkappele, you follow the soft splashing of the Schmutter back to the monastery.

The cloister garden at Holzen Monastery was not an ornamental garden, but a place for prayer and meditation. Its original form can still be discerned in the cruciform layout of the paths in the inner courtyard. The Benedictine nuns had the garden laid out behind high monastery walls at the end of the 17th century so that no one from the outside could see inside.

Beautiful paths lead around Holzen Monastery, following the Schmutter River. The first monastery was located in the valley around 1150. The original monastery church was also situated there. However, the riverside location proved problematic due to the wet and marshy ground. After repeated destruction, the decision was made to rebuild the monastery further up the hill. The Schmutter River remained important nonetheless. The path to the monastery's own mill, which operated until the 1960s, ran along the river.
