This route was planned by komoot.
No, there are no entrance fees or permits required to access the Dodge Nature Center Trails. They are open to the public at no cost.
The trails are open every day of the year, from sunrise to sunset, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural beauty throughout the seasons.
The Dodge Nature Center is spread across four properties in the Twin Cities metro area, including locations in West St. Paul, Mendota Heights, and Cottage Grove. Each property typically has designated parking areas for visitors. Check the official Dodge Nature Center website for specific parking instructions for the property you plan to visit.
Yes, the trails are generally considered accessible and are a great place for beginners and families with children. The overall difficulty is rated as easy, with terrain described as gentle to moderate. There are also shorter trails like the Preschool Trail (0.3 mi) and Evergreen Trail (0.12 mi) perfect for shorter walks.
You'll experience a diverse range of natural landscapes, including restored prairies, woodlands (both hardwood and old-growth forests), and wetlands. One property even features a 10-acre lake. The terrain is generally gentle to moderate, though you might encounter some steps or short sections with surface irregularities.
Beyond the natural beauty, the center integrates agricultural elements, so you might see a working model farm with farm animals, an orchard, a bee apiary, and raptor mews housing rescued birds. The trails also offer opportunities to observe abundant local wildlife and flourishing native habitats. The center is also known for its environmental education programs.
Generally, dogs are not permitted on most trails within the Dodge Nature Center. There may be an exception for an exterior bike trail, but it's best to leave your furry friends at home for the main hiking paths.
The trails are open year-round, offering different experiences with each season. Spring brings new growth and migrating birds, summer offers lush greenery, fall showcases vibrant foliage, and winter provides a serene, snow-covered landscape. Your best time to visit depends on the experience you're seeking.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the River to River Greenway, Preschool Trail, Charlton Trail, Evergreen Trail, and Barenscheer Trail.
The Dodge Nature Center offers a "Dodge Hiking Challenge" which encourages visitors to explore all four distinct properties to discover different biomes, including old-growth forests, wetlands, and prairies. This is a great way to experience the full variety the center has to offer.
Given the diverse terrain and potential for wildlife viewing, we recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes, water, and binoculars. Insect repellent might be useful during warmer months. Since there are farm animals and raptors, you might also consider bringing a camera!
The goal for today's hike was to complete another AllTrails verified trail and to create a komoot highlight at the Dodge Nature Center Main Property, hoping to trigger a komoot ready-made route there. The Dodge Nature Center consists of four distinct properties. This highlight is located at the trail center of the Main Property, which is located in West Saint Paul and spans 110 acres. Directly to the south of the Main Property is the Marie Property, which covers 40 acres and is situated along the south side of Marie Avenue. In nearby Mendota Heights, the Lilly Property encompasses 170 acres and already has a komoot highlight and pre-made route. Lastly, the Shepard Farm, which is 140 acres in size, is located several miles to the east in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. I am curious to see if the komoot algorithm will now generate a ready-made route for the Main Property, as it already has for the Lilly Property of the Dodge Nature Center.
