Shoshone Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The parking lot is not signposted and the forest path looks like a secret tip. Shortly before reaching the viewpoint, however, is a fully equipped picnic area with toilet. The viewpoint offers a 360 degree view of the Grand Canyon. We had the prospect for ourselves. The last 50 meters are reserved for vertigo-free Kraxlern. We left out the piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park to access the Shoshone Point Trail?

The trailhead for Shoshone Point is located off Desert View Drive, approximately 2 miles east of Grand Canyon Village. There is a small, unmarked parking area directly off the highway. Since it's not on official park maps and lacks shuttle service, parking is generally available, but it's always best to arrive early during peak seasons.

Is the Shoshone Point Trail dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally permitted on the Shoshone Point Trail, provided they are kept on a leash at all times. Always remember to pack out any waste to keep the trail clean for everyone.

What is the best time of year to hike the Shoshone Point Trail?

The trail is accessible year-round, but spring and fall offer the most pleasant hiking conditions with mild temperatures. Summer can be very hot, and winter may bring snow and ice, requiring appropriate gear. Many visitors enjoy sunrise or sunset for the spectacular views and fewer crowds.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for the Shoshone Point Trail?

While there are no specific permits required for the Shoshone Point Trail itself, it is located within Grand Canyon National Park, so standard park entrance fees apply. These fees grant you access to the entire park for a set period.

What makes the Shoshone Point Trail a unique Grand Canyon experience?

This trail is considered a 'hidden gem' because it's not typically marked on official park maps and is only accessible by hiking, which significantly reduces foot traffic. This offers a more secluded and peaceful experience, making it one of the best places to enjoy sunrise and sunset views of the Grand Canyon away from the crowds. It's also unique as the only outdoor location in Grand Canyon National Park that can be reserved for private events.

Is the trail suitable for beginners or families?

Yes, the Shoshone Point Trail is generally considered easy and is suitable for most ages and abilities, including beginners and families. It's a relatively short out-and-back route with minimal elevation gain. While mostly flat, some sections can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

What is the terrain like on the Shoshone Point Trail?

The trail primarily follows an old, mostly flat dirt road. It meanders through a pleasant, often shady forest dominated by Ponderosa Pines, transitioning to a mixed Pinyon Pine–Juniper forest. The path is well-defined, though it can be covered with pine needles and small rocks. Near the viewpoint, there is a narrow ledge that requires caution.

What kind of views can I expect at Shoshone Point?

Upon reaching Shoshone Point, you'll be greeted with breathtaking panoramic views of the Grand Canyon, including the Colorado River and prominent rock formations like Newton Butte, Cremation Creek, Lonetree, and Desert View Tower. The viewpoint offers expansive north-to-northeast vistas, perfect for photography.

Are there facilities available at Shoshone Point?

Yes, at the point itself, there's a picnic area equipped with tables, grills, fire pits, and composting toilets. A covered pavilion is also available, making it a great spot for a break or a meal with a view.

What wildlife might I see on the trail?

You might spot various wildlife along the trail, including mule deer, squirrels, and a variety of bird species, such as the majestic California condor. Wild horses have also been occasionally sighted near the trail.

Is the Shoshone Point Trail a loop or out-and-back route?

The Shoshone Point Trail is an out-and-back route. You hike to the viewpoint and then return along the same path to the trailhead.

What should I wear or bring for this hike?

Sturdy footwear is advisable due to potentially uneven terrain. Depending on the season, bring layers for varying temperatures, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and plenty of water, as there is no water available on the trail itself. Binoculars can enhance your wildlife and canyon viewing experience.
