Hiking

The Cadillac South Ridge Trail offers a varied and engaging hike to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park's highest peak. You'll start in a cool, evergreen forest with moss and gnarled roots underfoot, gradually transitioning to more open areas where pink granite becomes prominent. Along the way, you'll pass unique features like The Featherbed, a small pond, before reaching the exposed ridgeline and panoramic summit views. This moderate 4.5-mile (7.2 km) route, with a gentle 97 feet (30 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 2 hours and 12 minutes to complete, making it a rewarding alternative to driving to the top.

Planning your visit is straightforward, with the trailhead located conveniently along Route 3 near Blackwoods Campground. Roadside parking is available, and an access trail from the campground also connects to the start. While popular, especially during summer, consider an early start to enjoy the trail with fewer crowds. Dogs are permitted on the trail, provided they are on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

What sets this trail apart is its continuous, gradual journey through diverse landscapes, offering an immersive experience that contrasts sharply with simply driving to the summit. It's known as one of the longest straight stretches of trail in Acadia National Park, providing a more peaceful experience compared to other routes that might skirt the Park Loop Road. The summit views are spectacular, encompassing the Atlantic Ocean, outlying islands, and the Gulf of Maine.

View of Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island from Cadillac Mountain

Highlight • Viewpoint

Bike racks are available outside the Visitor Center, which has bathrooms, a gift shop, and a place to refill water bottles. You can walk your bike on paved paths to the West of the parking lot and visitor center where there are sweeping views of Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island. The sun rises on the summit of Cadillac Mountain before any other land in the U.S., and in the summer every morning hundreds of visitors purchase tickets to drive up the Park Loop Road to watch the sunrise. If you bike up for the sunrise you don't need a ticket, but be sure to wear good reflective gear and lights and expect to be accompanied by a conga line of tourists in SUVs.

The Cadillac South Ridge Trail is a great route to the summit of the highest mountain in Acadia National Park. When descending this route, you constantly have spectacular views of the sea to the south. Halfway from the summit to Featherbed, a small mountain lake in a depression along the trail, you come to the turnoff to the Cadillac West Face Trail. Along the way, red signs warn several times about the danger of this route.

The "Dike Peak" lies along the "Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail" south of the small mountain lake "The Featherbed". However, the small elevation is not included in the statistics of the "26 peaks in Acadia National Park".
The "Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail" follows the ridge west of the summit down to the depression at 'Fetherbed Lake' and then over the 'Dike Peak' and 'Eagles Crag' to the 'Champlain Drive'. On the way down you have a wonderful view of the Atlantic Ocean to the south.
