This trail is located in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in Oregon. The trailhead is easily accessible directly off the Historic Columbia River Highway, just a short drive east of Troutdale. There is a dedicated parking area right at the base of Horsetail Falls.
The komoot tour to Horsetail Falls and Ponytail Falls is a relatively short and easy hike, taking approximately 18 minutes to complete the 0.7 km (0.45 mile) path with about 92 meters (300 feet) of elevation gain. If you choose to do the full 2.5-mile loop trail that includes Oneonta Falls, it will take longer, typically 1.5 to 2 hours.
The trail features switchbacks that ascend the hillside. You'll encounter a metal footbridge and a unique section where the path goes behind Ponytail Falls within a naturally eroded cavern. The path is generally well-maintained, but expect some climbing.
The hike begins at the base of the 176-foot Horsetail Falls and leads to the 80-foot Ponytail Falls, where you can walk behind the waterfall. You'll also cross above Oneonta Falls and enjoy outstanding views of the Columbia River Valley, surrounded by an abundance of moss, lichen, ferns, and mushrooms.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, always ensure your dog is on a leash and that you pack out any waste to help keep the area clean and enjoyable for everyone.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but spring offers lush greenery and strong waterfall flows, while fall brings vibrant foliage. Be aware that the trail can be extremely busy during the summer months, so consider visiting early in the morning or on weekdays for a more peaceful experience.
No, there are typically no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Horsetail Falls Trail itself. However, some popular areas within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area may require timed-entry permits or have parking fees during peak seasons. Always check current regulations before your visit.

Yes, the Horsetail Falls Trail is generally considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for families. The unique experience of walking behind Ponytail Falls is often a highlight for children. Just be mindful of the switchbacks and some climbing sections.
Even for a short hike, it's advisable to bring water, sturdy footwear, and a rain jacket, as weather in the Columbia River Gorge can change quickly. If you plan to walk behind Ponytail Falls, you might get a little wet, so waterproof gear or a change of clothes could be useful.
While there are no amenities directly at the trailhead, the nearby towns along the Historic Columbia River Highway, such as Corbett, Cascade Locks, or Troutdale, offer various dining options and services for before or after your hike.
