The trail is accessible from the Lower (West) Manzana Trailhead. Parking is available there, and no fees are associated with accessing the trail itself.
The terrain is varied. Initially, the Lower (West) Manzana Trail is generally in good shape. As you progress, especially along the Potrero Canyon Trail, it involves a consistent, sometimes steep, climb. Expect a mix of open, grassy areas and sections along Manzana Creek. There are also multiple creek crossings, which can lead to wet boots, particularly further along the Manzana Trail.
The best time to hike is generally outside of peak summer and winter. Summertime heat can make the hike more difficult, and winter storms can cause high water levels at creek crossings, making them challenging to navigate. Spring and fall offer more moderate temperatures and potentially better water levels.
There are no fees to access the trail. However, because this route is within the San Rafael Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest, a California Campfire Permit is required if you plan to use a camp stove or have a campfire at Potrero Camp. You can obtain this permit from the USDA Forest Service website.
The Manzana Trail is located within the San Rafael Wilderness. While dogs are generally permitted in national forests, specific regulations for wilderness areas often apply, including leash requirements. It's always best to check the latest rules for the San Rafael Wilderness directly with the Los Padres National Forest before you go.
You'll encounter diverse scenery, including beautiful vista views at higher elevations towards Hurricane Deck. The riparian corridor along Manzana Creek features towering sycamores, white pines, manzanitas, oaks, and bay trees. Depending on the season, you might also see colorful wildflowers. Some sections may show signs of regrowth from past fires.
Manzana Creek provides seasonal water sources. However, it can dry up near Potrero Camp, especially during drier months. It's highly recommended to check recent water reports before your trip and carry sufficient water for your hike.
Yes, the Manzana Trail connects to other significant routes, including the Hurricane Deck Trail, offering opportunities for longer backpacking trips and diverse loops. The route itself follows the Manzana Trail for its entirety, with a section also on the Potrero Canyon Trail.
Potrero Camp is situated at the junction of the Manzana and Potrero Trails. It offers two campsites with tables and fire rings close to the creek. It's a common spot for an overnight stop or a lunch break, though many hikers continue further down-canyon to other camps.
The area is home to various wildlife, including deer, coyotes, and different reptiles. There's also a possibility of spotting rattlesnakes and black bears, so it's important to be aware of your surroundings and practice Leave No Trace principles.
The recorded duration for this specific route to Potrero Camp is approximately 45 minutes, covering a distance of about 2.2 kilometers. However, this can vary based on your pace, breaks, and trail conditions.
