Snowy River crossing

Highlight • River

At its lowest point, the track crosses the Snowy River near its confluence with Club Lake Creek, where stepping stones often help walkers keep their feet dry and, at lower water levels, a small island may appear midway across. This is the same Snowy River made famous in the poem *The Man from Snowy River* by Banjo Paterson and later the film *The Man from Snowy River* starring Kirk Douglas, adding a layer of Australian folklore to the alpine setting. After heavy rain or snowmelt the crossing can become impassable, but in calmer conditions it is a beautiful place to pause and take in the sound of the river and the surrounding valley scenery.

Main Range Walking Track

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Main Range Walking Track is a challenging alpine route that climbs from the Snowy River through herbfields and glacial terrain. Along the way, it passes lookouts, lakes, and high ridges before joining the summit walk near Rawson Pass. The trail is well-known for expansive mountain views and seasonal wildflowers, making it one of the park’s signature day walks.

Blue Lake Lookout

Highlight • Viewpoint

Blue Lake Lookout, via a short side track, offers beautiful views across the glacial lake and surrounding cirque with interpretive signs that explain the area’s glacial history and alpine ecology. It's one of the walking track's main viewpoints and a popular rest stop.

Carruthers Peak

Highlight • Summit

Carruthers Peak, at 2,145 metres, is one of the highest points along the Main Range, and marks the transition to the exposed ridge section of the track. From its slopes, you can enjoy fantastic sweeping views across the western mountains and surrounding alpine terrain.

Lake Albina Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is a great spot to get a clear view down over Lake Albina, set within the steep-sided cirque with its rugged rock walls and alpine slopes that drop sharply to the water. On clear days, the view extends along the Main Range, making this an ideal place to capture memorable photos before continuing along the track.

Mount Kosciuszko Summit Lookout marks the highest point in Australia at 2,228 metres, with wide, open views across the Snowy Mountains. The final stretch from Rawson Pass follows a gradual, exposed path across alpine terrain, where weather can shift quickly. From the top, you’re surrounded by rolling peaks, high plains, and distant ridgelines in every direction. There’s little shelter here, so expect wind even on clear days and allow time to take in the scale of the landscape before heading back down.

Rawson Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Rawson Pass sits at about 2,100 meters above sea level. Its the high saddle where the Main Range Track encounters the Mount Kosciuszko summit path. It's a junction and turning point, with trails leading either to the summit or back toward Charlotte Pass. The exposed alpine gives wide views across the plateau, making it a natural turning point on the circuit. Environmentally designed composting toilets are located here, but there's no water or shelter, so walkers need to come prepared.

A nice hike with changes in terrain. It is not particularly difficult in terms of elevation, just distance.
