Section A is often very muddy. The route is more used by horses. But worth it. We were on the road for a total of 8 hours.

Did this tour today. We started around 8:30 a.m. in jardín, took a Tuktuk to "Alto de las flores" (30 min tough ride for 7$).
You pass a house where you have to pay 4$ p.P. to pass because the way to the waterfall is private property (we did not pay because nobody was there). This first part is easy …

Is this trail suitable for beginners?

No, the Ruta a la Cueva del Esplendor from Jardín is considered a difficult hike. The route includes notably steep sections, especially the road leading out of town, and can be muddy. It involves a significant elevation gain of about 872 meters. Beginners might find it too strenuous.

What is the terrain like on the way to Cueva del Esplendor?

The terrain is varied and challenging. You'll encounter steep roads, farm trails, and dirt paths. Some sections might be muddy, and you could walk on old bridle paths (caminos de herradura). The route offers spectacular views over Jardín and the surrounding lush forests and coffee region.

How can I get to the Cueva del Esplendor trailhead from Jardín?

The trail starts directly from Jardín. However, for those looking for an easier option, it's possible to take a tuk-tuk or jeep part of the way up the steep road, significantly reducing the hiking time and effort required to reach the cave's entrance.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

Beyond the stunning natural scenery of the Antioquia region, key highlights include the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception near the start in Jardín, banana plantations on the climb, and the Telecommunications Towers Summit. The ultimate destination is the unique Cave of Splendor Waterfall, where a powerful waterfall cascades through a hole in the cave's roof.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Cueva del Esplendor?

Yes, the Cueva del Esplendor is located on private property, so visitors typically need to pay an entrance fee to access the cave and its waterfall. It's advisable to check current fees before your visit.

What is the best time of year to visit the Cueva del Esplendor?

While specific information on the best time of year isn't provided, generally, the dry season in Antioquia (roughly December to March and July to August) offers more pleasant hiking conditions with less mud. However, the waterfall's flow might be more impressive during or after the rainy season.

Is the Ruta a la Cueva del Esplendor dog-friendly?

Information regarding dogs on this specific trail is not available. Given that the cave is on private property and the trail can be challenging with steep and potentially muddy sections, it's recommended to inquire locally about dog policies before bringing your pet.

Is there a way to make the hike to Cueva del Esplendor easier?

Absolutely. If you find the full hike from Jardín too strenuous, you can significantly ease the journey by taking a tuk-tuk or jeep for the initial steep section of the road. This allows you to start your hike closer to the cave's entrance, reducing the overall distance and elevation gain you need to cover on foot.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the trail's difficulty and duration, you should bring plenty of water, snacks, sturdy hiking boots suitable for muddy and steep terrain, rain gear (even in dry season), sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a camera for the spectacular views. Cash for the entrance fee to the cave is also essential.

Is this a loop trail or out-and-back?

This route is primarily an out-and-back trail. You hike to the Cueva del Esplendor and then return along the same path to Jardín.
