Hiking

Rånö offers an easy and enjoyable hike through open forests, along sandy beaches, and to delightful swimming coves. The western shores are especially peaceful and make a perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunset. Late summer and early autumn are prime mushroom-foraging seasons on Rånö, with the area north of Rånö Gård being particularly rewarding.

In summertime, you’ll find a convenience store and the restaurant Rånö Källan at the quay where the Waxholm ferry arrives. The yellow-and-blue SAT markers are easy to follow, and much of the route follows a straightforward gravel road.

Accommodation includes a holiday village at Knicksand, which must be booked in advance. A campground is located on the opposite side of the island, with lovely views over Ålösund. Wild camping is permitted for one or two nights, but please be respectful of locals and leave no trace.

You can travel to Rånö year-round from Nynäshamn and Ålö. During summer, the north–south ferry line — which follows the entire SAT — serves Rånö along the same route as the Waxholm ferry. The sections on Utö, Ålö, Rånö, and Nåttarö complement each other well.

The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience.
