Hiking
Fjärdlång is an island of strong seasonal contrasts. Between mid-June and mid-August it can be busy with guest boats, but outside of peak weeks, you’ll find solitude. You’ll also need to be self-sufficient as out of season there are no services on the island.
The island is a nature reserve, and the trail is a technical hike, though never overly difficult. Your rewards are winding forest paths, cliffs with breathtaking views, and the quietness of wide-open pastures.
The route, marked with the familiar yellow-and-blue SAT ribbons and arrows, is best walked counterclockwise. Starting from the pier, a narrow, winding path climbs onto the cliffs, offering many opportunities to stop and enjoy the view. From there, the loop continues over a variety of surfaces: tractor trails, gravel roads, and more technical paths.
The island’s only hostel is currently closed. You may be able to stay at Norrötorpet, a cottage rented through the Archipelago Foundation, or in one of two non-reservable cabins at Myggskär. If these are not available, the only alternative for overnight accommodation is wild camping. In all cases, you’ll need to bring your own food, water, and firewood — don’t leave your arrangements to chance.
You can travel to Fjärdlång from Utö and Ornö during the summer on the north–south ferry line. Outside the main season, boats run between Dalarö and Fjärdlång from Friday to Sunday. Be sure to catch the Sunday return ferry. The stages of Utö and Fjärdlång combine well.
The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience.
