Highlight • Natural Monument

The Cocora Valley, located in the heart of Quindío, is one of Colombia's most iconic landscapes. Surrounded by mountains and shrouded in the characteristic mist of the Andean forest, this valley is renowned for its towering wax palms, a national symbol and protected species. It forms part of Los Nevados National Natural Park, guaranteeing the conservation of its unique flora and fauna. Its cool, humid climate, with frequent rains, creates an ideal environment for hiking among the mountains and natural viewpoints.

January 2, 2022,Hike around Cocora Valley
Nice trail, not difficult but not easy as well. You should bring good hiking boots because the second part of the trail is very wet, slippery and steep.

After the half of the trail you can also add Acaime Kolibri Casa. It's another apr. 2-3 km and a nice place to view Kolibri and enjoy some warm Soup or a …
Speedy hike to the Cocora valley before going to a coffee tour. Willies depart from salento from 6am as they fill. Great to see the special wax palms
I advise you to start the hike in the other direction, the climb in the jungle is easier than the descent and you can add a loop to enjoy the palm trees even more at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical duration for hiking the Circular del Valle del Cocora?

The full loop typically takes between 4 to 7 hours to complete, depending on trail conditions and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.

What kind of terrain will I encounter on this hike?

You'll experience a diverse range of terrain, from grassy grazing lands with towering wax palms to dense rainforest and cloud forest. Expect muddy sections, especially during the rainy season, and several river crossings over 'rickety bridges'. There are also uphill climbs, including a particularly steep section.

What are the main highlights along the route?

The most iconic feature is the majestic Quindío wax palms, the tallest palms in the world. Other highlights include a visit to a hummingbird house, a small waterfall on the Quindío river, and a valley viewpoint offering stunning vistas of the Cocora Valley.

What is the best time of year to hike the Circular del Valle del Cocora?

While the trail can be hiked year-round, the dry season (roughly December to March and July to August) generally offers more favorable conditions with less mud. However, even during the dry season, rain is possible, so be prepared for varying weather.

Is the trail suitable for beginners?

The trail is generally considered easy to moderate. While it doesn't require advanced technical skills, the length (approximately 9 km), potential for deep mud, steep sections, and an altitude above 9,000 feet can make it challenging for some. Hiking poles are highly recommended.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for the trail or Los Nevados National Natural Park?

Yes, as the valley is part of the Los Nevados National Natural Park, there are typically small entrance fees collected at various points along the trail, especially if you enter through private land sections. These fees contribute to trail maintenance and local communities. No specific permits are usually required for this day hike.

Is the Circular del Valle del Cocora trail dog-friendly?

While local regulations can vary, dogs are generally permitted on the trail. However, due to the presence of livestock, wildlife, and other hikers, it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash at all times and ensure you clean up after them. Be mindful of the challenging terrain and potential for mud.

Where does the trail start and how do I access the trailhead?

The trail typically starts near the town of Salento. Many visitors take shared jeeps (Willys) from Salento's main square directly to the trailhead in Cocora Valley. Parking is available near the trailhead, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays.

Does this trail intersect with other paths?

Yes, the route primarily follows sections of the 'Camino Cocora - Laguna El Encanto' and 'Cocora-Estrella de Agua' trails, among others, as it winds through the valley.

What's an insider tip for hiking the Circular del Valle del Cocora?

Consider your hiking direction carefully. Going clockwise allows you to see the famous wax palms early in your hike, while going counter-clockwise saves the most iconic views for the latter part of your journey after navigating the more challenging forest sections. Both directions offer a unique experience.

What should I pack for this hike?

Given the varied terrain and potential for mud and rain, we recommend sturdy waterproof hiking boots, rain gear, layers of clothing, plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, and hiking poles. Cash for entrance fees and the hummingbird house is also advisable.
