January 4, 2024,Hike from Minca to Marinka waterfall passing through oído del mundo waterfall
Way too many cars and motorbikes on the way, not particularly enjoyable. The waterfalls (2 in this hike) would be very beatiful if they weren't so packed with people, Marinka especially, mega touristic and cost 16.000 per person (a little too much in my opinion)

A sweaty 8.3 km from Minca there and back. Komot was overwhelmed.
We were here 14 years ago. Back then there was no infrastructure at the waterfall and it was completely alone. Now it's overpopulated by Instagrammers who get themselves carted up in a motorbike taxi to show off their skills.
The outflow from the waterfall was specially dammed so …

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for the Cascadas de Marinka or the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta?

While there are no specific permits required for hiking in the general Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta area for this trail, there is typically an entrance fee to access the private property where the Cascadas de Marinka are located. This fee helps maintain the facilities and the site.

Is there parking available at the trailhead for Cascadas de Marinka?

The trail starts from Minca, which is a small town. While there isn't a dedicated large parking lot specifically for the trailhead, you can often find parking within Minca itself. Many visitors also opt to take a mototaxi from Minca to shorten the walk, especially if they prefer to avoid the initial road section.

Is the Cascadas de Marinka trail dog-friendly?

The trail itself is generally accessible for dogs, but it's important to note that the Cascadas de Marinka site is on private property. It's best to check with the local operators at the waterfalls directly regarding their specific pet policies before you go.

What is the best time of year to hike to Cascadas de Marinka?

The best time to visit is generally during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During this period, the paths are less muddy and slippery, making for a more enjoyable hike. However, the waterfalls are beautiful year-round, and the wet season (May to November) can offer more lush scenery, though with potentially more challenging trail conditions.

Is the hike to Cascadas de Marinka suitable for beginners?

The trail is considered moderate, requiring good fitness, but it features easily accessible paths. While some sections can be steep and potentially slippery after rain, it's generally manageable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

What is the terrain like on the way to Cascadas de Marinka?

The trail traverses through a lush jungle landscape. Initially, it largely follows the Cerro Kenedy Oriente road out of Minca. As you get closer to the waterfalls, the path can become muddy, wet, and uneven in parts, making sturdy hiking boots beneficial. You'll experience tropical forest scenery and occasional views of Santa Marta.

What natural features and attractions can I expect to see along the route?

Beyond the main Cascadas de Marinka, you'll hike through lush tropical forest. You might also encounter the Oído del Mundo Waterfall, which features a tranquil pool. The journey offers a chance to appreciate local flora and fauna, and from certain viewpoints, you can enjoy panoramic views across the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, stretching to Santa Marta and the Caribbean Sea.

Can I swim at the waterfalls along the trail?

Yes, absolutely! The Cascadas de Marinka offer refreshing pools where visitors can swim and cool off. The water is fed by the cold streams originating from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The Oído del Mundo Waterfall also has a tranquil pool suitable for swimming.

Are there facilities available at Cascadas de Marinka?

Yes, the Cascadas de Marinka site is well-maintained and offers excellent amenities. You'll find giant hammocks for relaxation, a café, clean changing rooms, and restrooms, making it a comfortable spot to spend an extended period.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route to Cascadas de Marinka also passes through sections of the Camino oido del mundo and the Path to Minca Glamping.

What should I wear and bring for the hike?

Given the moderate difficulty and potentially muddy terrain, comfortable, sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, insect repellent, and a swimsuit if you plan to take a dip in the waterfall pools. A light rain jacket might also be useful, especially during the wet season.
