Cycling

This short and pleasant tour is perfect for all levels and is ideal for any type of bike, thanks to the entirely flat route that winds between the city and the countryside. Weather permitting, don't forget your swimsuit for a dip in the lake.

Starting from Pisa Centrale train station, the route quickly takes you out of the city center, crossing residential streets and then the Via Emilia to immerse yourself in the quiet countryside. Follow the Fosso Caligi canal for the first few kilometers, admiring the striking contrast between the plains and the Tuscan hills rising on the horizon.

About nine kilometers further, you reach the Ragnaione Water Pump, an important hydraulic system and a testament to the rural engineering essential for land reclamation. Continuing, you arrive at Lake Le Tamerici in the San Rossore Park. This man-made body of water is the perfect place for a break or a picnic, offering recreational activities such as canoeing and sailing.

On the way back, you pass through Coltano. Here, a radio station of exceptional historical and scientific significance was located, where Guglielmo Marconi made the first radiotelegraph transmission in history, an experiment that is the basis of all modern telecommunications.

Following the Via Emilia, you return to the station. If you still feel like exploring, you can continue into the historic center to admire the unmissable Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Coltano

Highlight • Settlement

Small hamlet (120 inhabitants) of Pisa, Coltano is immersed in a beautiful pine forest between Pisa and Livorno and is bordered to the north by Pisa airport, to the west by the American military base of Camp Darby, to the East by the Via Emilia (sr.206) and to the south by the Arnaccio road (ss.67 bis).
For centuries it was the Medici's hunting reserve; in the first forty years of the twentieth century, was the seat of the most important radio center in Europe for transcontinental communications, designed and inaugurated in 1911 by Guglielmo Marconi who from here sent the first radio signals to Africa, then to Rio de Janeiro and finally all over the world.
In the months immediately following the Second World War, until December 1945, it hosted a concentration camp, set up by the Allies and managed by soldiers of the 92nd Division "Buffalo" USA; here military prisoners from the former Italian Social Republic, Nazi soldiers and foreign collaborationists were collected and detained.

Guglielmo Marconi Radio Station

Highlight • Historical Site

A building of exceptional historical and scientific significance, sadly abandoned and left to crumble piece by piece. It was here that Guglielmo Marconi experimented with radio waves, sending a signal to America and lighting a light bulb.

This was the first radiotelegraph transmission in history. The exceptional value of this site is clear, as every modern device (cell phones, radios, televisions, and the internet) originates from this site.

Hi, I tried to do the route but I couldn't find the path from the Ragnaione pumping station to Lake Tamerici; there is a ditch and I couldn't find a way to cross it. Otherwise, the landscape is very beautiful.
