Hiking

Two different, enchanting towns that are connected by the Moselle and separated by the vineyards: from Bernkastel-Kues, which is known for its wines and beautiful half-timbered houses, you hike to the Art Nouveau town of Traben-Trarbach.

The starting point of this tour is in the old town of Bernkastel with its winding streets and traditional houses. The path leads you through the Graacher Tor into the vineyards. The fantastic views of the Moselle and Bernkastel-Kues change with every step. At the watershed between Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach you finally reach the highest point of this hike and a rest area invites you to take a break.

It continues through the underpass of the B50 and then begins the descent back into the beautiful Moselle valley. When you leave the forest, you have a view of the gentle vineyards of the torrent valley and the Grevenburg castle ruins. Along meadow orchards you hike down to Traben-Trarbach. The bridge gate built in 1898/99 awaits you there, which bears witness to the wealth of the city at the time it was founded. You have reached your destination on the banks of the Moselle. The way back to the starting point in Bernkastel-Kues is the same, by bus or by boat with a great view.

Graacher Gate (City Gate and Local History Museum, Bernkastel-Kues)

Highlight • Monument

The old city gate, the only one of eight that is still standing. Today there is a local history museum in the city gate. You can well imagine how people used to go through it.

St. Joseph's Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Small chapel along the way
The 18th century chapel in the Bernkasteler vineyards was renovated in 1921 under the supervision of the sculptor Paul Simon.
According to oral tradition, the sanctuary was originally intended to honor St. James and only later found its present form as the Joseph sanctuary. A figure of St. Kilian watches over the entrance to the chapel. The two reliefs inside and the figure of Kilian are works by Paul Simon. The statue of St. Joseph inside the chapel is 135 cm tall and made of wood.

The gate testifies to the wealth of the city at the time of origin, when Traben-Trarbach was the largest wine transfer to Bordeaux.

August 14, 2021, Traben-Trarbach über den Berg nach Bernkastel-Kues

Over the mountain from one twin town to the other and back by boat (takes almost as long with the lock and Moselle loops).

Went on a trip with the hiking club today 👍 It was a very nice day 🤗

The tour along the Moselle by boat takes over 2 hours

The tour starts at the Graach city gate of Bernkastel and leads steeply uphill. The fog is clearing in the valley. The fog billows around Landstuhl Castle, creating a very special atmosphere. The climb offers wonderful views of the winding Moselle. From the summit point it then goes downhill to Traben Trabach and the Moselle.

Tour 100! 🥂🥳 From the Art Nouveau town of Traben-Trarbach to the historic old town of Bernkastel-Kues. The tour starts on the banks of the Moselle in Trarbach. It goes directly uphill, past the high school, vineyards, abandoned vineyards, forests, and orchards to the iron wine list. A short time later, it descends towards Bernkastel-Kues. We first crossed a forest, then beautiful vineyards 🍇. For much of the descent, we had beautiful views of Bernkastel-Kues, the Moselle, and Landshut Castle. After the tour (with my parents in tow), we strolled through the old town, including coffee and cake, and then, in the traditional style, we took a Moselle boat back to Traben-Trarbach. https://www.outdooractive.com/mobile/de/route/wanderung/traben-trarbach/t-6-auf-schusters-rappen-vom-jugendstil-zur-fachwerkromantik/22031638/

Tiring ascent 😰 But we did it. The descent is still strenuous, but easier. After a short stay in Bernkastel-Kues, it was relaxed by entspannt back to TT.

Today a relaxed hike with sightseeing in Traben-Trarbach. And then by boat back to Bernkastel-Kues.

Beautiful hiking trail, initially with a 2.5 km climb through vineyards and forest paths. Then it's all downhill. We recommend taking the boat back to Bernkastel.
